On Wednesday June 7th the Junior AFL boys were at Figtree Oval competing for the AFL Junior High School Cup. The boys took on Dapto High in the first game and played a great game surprising themselves with their AFL skills and kicking goals frequently throughout the game and getting a comfortable win. St Joseph's then took on a strong Edmund Rice team in the final. The result didn't go our way in the final however the boys put in a great effort on the day with many of the boys playing their first game of AFL.

Standouts on the day were: Travis McGeorge, Sam Shepherd, Phoenix Hiscocks, Pacey Moylan, Nash Burling and Jacob Pollard.

Well done boys on the second place finish!

In a thrilling showcase of skill and determination, the AFL Junior Girls Gala Day unfolded at Figtree Ovals. The event brought together young athletes from various schools and clubs, all eager to showcase their passion for Australian Rules football. Our team displayed incredible talent, commitment, and teamwork throughout the tournament, eventually securing a 3rd place finish. The tournament began with a fiercely contested match against Kiama High School and then in our second game we faced St Mary’s. In both games our girls showed fierce determination and their hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship were evident in every match they played. This experience will undoubtedly serve as a valuable learning opportunity, motivating them to continue improving at training as we prepare for our gala day in term 4.

Standouts on the day: Cate Mansbridge (MVP), Emily Hollingsworth, Shakira Buys, Angel Barbaro, Claire-Rose James and Charlie Mayer

Well done girls!

Diocesan Cross Country

On Tuesday 13th June, we had 3 senior students compete as part of the Wollongong Diocesan Team at the NSWCCC Cross Country Championships. This competition was a great success for all three of our students with Bailey Miller placing 15th in the 18 year boys as well as Lachlan Haining 6th in the same age group and Grace Pomery placing 2nd in the 18 year girls. Lachlan and Grace will now compete as part of the NSWCCC on the 21st July to fight for a place in the NSW All Schools team. We wish them all the best on this journey.

Elite/Aspiring Athlete Excursion

The Bai Med Excursion for the Elite/Aspiring Athletes Program proved to be an invaluable experience for our students, offering a unique combination of fitness testing, a fitness circuit, and a psychology education session with Condor Performance. Held at the Bai Med Performance Centre in Figtree, the excursion provided the athletes with an opportunity to reflect and improve on their physical and mental performance in their respective sports.

The day commenced with comprehensive fitness testing conducted by the experienced team from Bai Med. The athletes underwent a series of tests designed to assess their physical capabilities and identify areas for improvement. These tests included measurements of speed, agility, strength, endurance, and flexibility. It was great to see so much improvement from these students since Term 1 testing.

Following the fitness testing, the athletes embarked on a challenging fitness circuit designed to improve their overall strength, endurance, and agility. The circuit consisted of a series of stations, each focusing on different aspects of physical fitness. The athletes rotated through the stations, engaging in exercises such as resistance training, plyometrics, speed drills, and core strengthening.

In addition to the physical aspects of performance, the excursion included a psychology education session facilitated by Condor Performance, renowned experts in sport psychology. The session aimed to equip the athletes with valuable mental skills and strategies to optimise their performance and well-being.

The session covered various topics including goal setting, mental toughness, focus and concentration, managing pressure, and visualisation techniques. Through interactive discussions, practical exercises, and real-life examples, the athletes gained a deeper understanding of the psychological aspects of athletic performance and how they can harness mental strength to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

The athletes demonstrated exceptional commitment, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn throughout the excursion. Their dedication to pushing their limits and embracing new challenges was truly inspiring. The knowledge gained from the fitness testing and the psychology education session will undoubtedly benefit the athletes in their ongoing athletic pursuits.
