FUTURE FINDERS DAY
UOW hosted a day for students in Year 10 who are planning to study at university in the future. The students had the opportunity to be on campus for a day, participating in a variety of taster sessions and activities to help with career planning. The Creative Arts faculty put on fantastic Drama activities and the Psychology lecture really got them thinking about the power of the mind. The students all said it was fun, informative and a wonderful day on campus. The day helped them in varied ways and provided a snapshot into their future as students of UOW.
WORK EXPERIENCE RECOUNT
Year Ten student Crystalina Milosvski recalls her week at Wollongong Hospital as a work Experience student.
Last Monday, on the 20th of May, my work experience week commenced at Wollongong Hospital. I felt ready and prepared because I knew that I was going to get a wonderful experience out of this to wrap my head around my aspired career as a paramedic that can potentially begin in nursing. My first day started off with an induction alongside 8 lovely beautiful girls from different schools all across the district. After the induction finished we all got directed to our wards, my first ward luckily was the children's ward! which was reviewed as one of the favourite wards by previous students completing this health care worker program. Throughout my week the wards I visited were as follows children's ward, rehabilitation, and palliative care, renal dialysis, general surgical and general medical. I was privileged enough to receive an offer to attend a day at the renal dialysis ward as it is one of the newer wards at the hospital. Overall, it was an experience that opened many doors for me for any future endeavors I may encounter. The activities I got to participate in were very rewarding since I got a feeling of accomplishment after each one of them. On the second day, I visited Rehabilitation and palliative care; I was lucky enough to be partnered with a lovely (AIN) which simply means that she was an assistant nurse who showed me around and taught me some jobs that she does in her everyday life. She opened my eyes to a new pathway that I never thought I would be considering in taking a part of throughout my high school education. Hopefully, with all my best wishes, I am willing to study at TAFE to become an assistant in nursing throughout my senior years. My future career plans include attending the University of Wollongong to pursue a career to become a registered nurse. I feel that St Josephs has given me many opportunities to accomplish and develop my ideas into reality. Anyone who is looking to pursue a career in medicine whether that be as a nurse, paramedic, heart surgeon doctor, and so on I believe that this health care program is the most fulfilling an eyeopening experience that you will not remorse because there are plenty of opportunities to have a chat with anyone who works in the areas you are interested in. My feedback from the nurses and educators helped me gain that confidence, that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to. So my advice to anyone who is looking to enroll for this program I 100% guarantee you will not regret it, at the end of this program you will receive a certificate that indicates that you completed the course successfully, this can be used as a reference for any future resumes for any future jobs, not just in this area but I am certain that you will receive something like this throughout a variety of different experiences.
