Sports Update

Diocesan Athletics Team

Congratulations on all students selected to represent St Joseph’s Catholic High School in the Diocesan Athletics Team. The team will compete at the Wollongong Diocesan Secondary Athletics Championships to be held at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Friday 2nd August. A charter bus has been organised to transport students to and from the event. Students will need to arrive at school bright and early at 6:15am.

Permission notes have been put onto Compass so could all parents/guardians please pay and give consent ASAP. It is expected that all students will attend this event. If students cannot attend (e.g due to injury), we need time to be able to fill their spots so that St Joseph’s can have maximum representation at the carnival. If unable to attend, please decline the event and ask your child to let Mrs Musgrave know why they are unable to attend (email musgravec01@dow.catholic.edu.au).

The team that has been selected can be found at this link:

Year 10 PASS helping at St Paul's Athletics Carnival 13th June 2024

On Thursday, the 13th of June, 18 students from the Year 10 PASS Class attended the St. Paul's Athletics Carnival at Croome Rd to assist in the smooth running of events. This is part of one of their modules exploring opportunities and pathways in the sporting industry, which they will be learning about later in Term 4.

The students embraced the opportunity to run novelty races, timekeep, and encourage the students to participate in field events. A highlight of the day was seeing Tasman Rippon run the 100m with a Kinder student who was hesitant to compete on his own. It was a wonderful display of support and encouragement. Well done to the Year 10 PASS Class.

A big thank you to Mrs Foster for supervising the students on the day.

The St Joseph’s students’ behaviour was so good that we received this email from the Principal of St Paul’s:

“Dear Teachers and students of St Joseph's,

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to each one of you for your invaluable assistance during our athletics carnival last Thursday. Your enthusiasm, and hard work played a crucial role in making the event a success.

Your willingness to step up and help in various capacities ensured that the carnival ran smoothly and efficiently. From setting up equipment to managing activities and cheering on the participants, your contributions did not go unnoticed. The positive energy and team spirit you brought were truly inspiring and greatly appreciated by everyone involved.

Once again, thank you for your support and for being such wonderful representatives of St Joseph's. We look forward to collaborating with you in future events.

Warm regards,

Angela Pecnik

Basketball NSW CCC Qualifying Tournament 13th June 2024

On Thursday the 12th June, the Intermediate Boys Basketball contested the annual invitational knockout competition to challenge for a spot in the NSW CCC Basketball Championships.

The team trained in the early morning before school for most of Term 1 and 2. They were pumped and ready for their first game together.

Being a knockout competition, we needed to win our first game against Edmund Rice.

The boys started out well, matching Edmund Rice, basket for basket in the first half. Joey's went into the half time break being 1 point ahead. Unfortunately, the second half did not start too well. The one point lead quickly became a 12 point deficit. Unfortunately, we could not compete with the depth and experience of the Edmund Rice team, who won the game 47 to 67. Congratulations boys. You showed that you can mix it with the best. An awesome effort for a team who had not played together before and one that consisted of many Year 7 & 8 players.

Next Year !!!!

A huge thank you to Mrs Linsley who trained the boys before school on Tuesday mornings all year. Thanks also to all the parents who have driven their boys to these early morning training sessions. Training will start again as we get closer to the basketball gala day which will be held in Term 4.

The team consisted of Thomas Hoffman, Solomon Liu, Nash Burling, Jake Burling, Alex Sipka, Archie Faulks, Jack Woodward, Brody Tomasi, Jake Eager, Jack Rabay. Reserves Chase Goodman, Jaxon Moran. Injured Taj Miller.

Diocesan Netball Gala Day 14th June 2024

Thanks so much to Mrs Foster, Miss Allen, Mrs Madaschi and Miss Sumner who have given up their time to train and coach the girls.

A big ‘Thank you’ goes to Mrs Behl and Mrs Sharkey who put in a tremendous amount of time and effort to organise the Diocesean Netball carnival and ensure the smooth running of the day.

Junior Team A

The Division 1 junior girls competed in 7 games with 2 byes against some very strong competition. The girls continuously showed up for each other in every game and put their best foot forward having a positive attitude every time no matter the scoreboard. With each game they played the girls got stronger and by the end of the day gelled really well to put in a few strong performances to round out a fun day of netball. The girls fell very short in a couple of games but were successful in a couple coming away with a win and a draw. On a whole there were some strong individual and team performances and each and every member of the team represented St Joseph’s with pride and showed great sportsmanship the whole day. Well done girls.

Team B

The Division 2 junior girls had the toughest draw of the day with a total of 9 games and not a single bye.  Each and every team member improved their skills and the team improved across each game. As a team they supported each other and had positive attitudes right till the end of the day and the very last game. All the girls were very committed to training and trials and represented Joey’s with great perseverance. Their attitudes and efforts in each game really showed great sportsmanship at the carnival. Well done Girls.

Intermediate

Our intermediate girls were champions in Division 2 last year and this year we decided to tackle division 1. The day started with a great first win to set us up for the carnival against JohnTherry. We then came up against St Mary’s who won the carnival on the day. With a great fight we made a convincing attempt and fought hard to get a reasonable score. We also had a narrow loss to St Pat’s in the following game. We continued our day with great wins over Corpus, Holy Spirit and Magdalene. It was a great result for our girls, especially jumping up a division and arguably winning second place on the day. They all played so well and everyone contributed to a fantastic team effort making for a memorable Carnival. There were some great individual and whole team performances and every member of the team represented St Joseph’s with great pride and competitiveness.

Senior

Our seniors played  in Division 2 this year, competing in 5 games against some very strong teams. Despite not securing any wins they all played some great Netball. Kiana Rieck gave shooting a try and Kelsey May was very skilled picking up lots of rebounds in the defensive end. Bella Sacco was a late call up, had never played before and contributed to the team's efforts in a midcourt position. The girls enjoyed a great day of Netball and for some, it was their last Dio Carnival.

Push-Up Challenge

Lots of St Joseph’s students and staff have been taking part in the Push-Up challenge. The point of the challenge is to raise awareness of the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia and to raise awareness of mental health issues. Money raised in this challenge goes towards programs supporting the mental health.

Every Friday lunch in the COLA, teachers and students have been coming together to do push-ups which has been a lovely way to raise awareness and have fun as a Joey’s community.

Checkout the Joey's team if you would like to have a look at all the students and teachers involved and leave a message of support.
