Vinnies Winter Eat Out

On Wednesday the 21st of August, St Joseph’s hosted the ‘Vinnies Winter Eat Out’. The purpose of this after school event was to shine a spotlight on homelessness, break down stigmas and stereotypes and immerse students in the homeless experience to gain empathy. As a Catholic school, we recognise the human dignity of each person and our Josephite charism calls us to a life of service, responding to the needs in our community. Through this event we fundraised for the St Vincent de Paul society who uses the funds raised to make meal packs and maintain various services for homeless people in our local community.

A heartfelt thank you to Hineana from Vinnies, our guest speaker, who shared her valuable insight into the reality of homelessness and the wonderful work Vinnies do. We also would like to thank Tony Young and the Albion Park Vinnies Chapter for spending their time with us and sharing their stories with the students. Students gained a glimpse into the homeless experience by sharing a cup of soup before creating cardboard shelters, of which they spent an hour in, on a winter’s night. It was a memorable experience that promoted Catholic social action, enabling our students to live out our motto ‘Act Justly’.

We thank the parents who supported the event, families for donating, staff for supervising and the students for participating.
