Parents/Carers - Weekly Signing of the School Diary
The 2019 School Diary has been issued to all students. At the foot of the page of each week, there is a blank line for your parent/carer signature.
To support the learning growth of all students, it is a compulsory school requirement that every week, students show their parent/carers's signature in their Diary to their Homeroom Teacher or Coordinator when requested to do so in Homeroom. Please encourage your child to record the homework assigned to them each day because this assists greatly with their ability to be organised and complete all set work.
All parents and students, who may not have already done so, are also reminded to please sign pages 32 and 35 of your child's School Diary to acknowledge that you have read the School Policies in the front of the School Diary.
Uniform
It is pleasing to see our students are wearing their uniform with pride.
A reminder to parents to please keep a check on the length of your daughter's skirts throughout the year to ensure these are worn in accordance with the school's Uniform Policy in the School Diary.
Girls are required to wear white socks with both the summer skirt and tailored shorts, if they elect to wear shorts instead of the skirt.
Students are also permitted to wear 1 small stud or sleeper in each ear.
Your ongoing help and support in ensuring your child presents in the correct uniform each day is greatly appreciated.
School Bags
A reminder to parents and carers of Year 7 and Year 8 students that the St Joseph's Catholic High School bag is a compulsory requirement for all students in these year groups.
Lockers are available for students who wish to use these and can be arranged by collecting a Locker Request form from the School Office.
Our Year students will be particpating in YAM - Youth Aware of Mental Health.
The program begins Tuesday 12 Feb and will run each Tuesday for three weeks, during periods 2 and 3.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education
Dear Parents, Carers and Students
Welcome back! I am excited about 2019 and everything that this year brings to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education at St Joseph’s.
We will have Uncle Kevin Butler back at St Joseph’s painting another mural and also being involved with teaching art to some of our students.
We welcome Josephine Ball, our new Aboriginal Education Assistant, who comes to us from working at a local Catholic primary school. Jo isa local Dharawal Woman, who has experience in Aboriginal Dance and Art. Toumanda Fohrman, a former Student of St Joseph's is also providing support in 2019.
I‘m excited because we will be looking more into who you are as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, we will look at language, dreaming stories, Aboriginal dance, we will also look into your Mob and Totem, if that is something you and your family would like.
I would like to encourage our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to be more involved in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education program this year. My hope is that if you have knowledge, skills and understanding of local Aboriginal culture and customs, that you will be willing to share with our students who don’t have this understanding.
Last November we had Alex Murchison from Echo Tree, come to St Joseph’s and teach 8 of our young men, myself and Mr Mark Mongta our Aboriginal Education Assistant how to make our very own Didjeridu. Alex brought down Didjeridu blanks, which had already been hollowed out by termites.
Our students had such a wonderful day learning how to use a draw knife, chisels, files and sandpaper to make their Didjeridu. They then oiled them, applied wax to the end for the mouthpiece and had a play before they took them home.
In 2019 we will be running this program again and have made it a bit easier for families to pay for this wonderful experience by allowing for the $195 cost of the program to be added to your school fee for 2019. This means that it will only cost $3.75 per week!
Please visit the school website or your Sentral notices to download the note and return to the office ASAP.
