SCHOOL UNIFORM REMINDER
This week staff have continued to remind students of the importance of wearing the correct school uniform.
Students wearing anything other than a plain white bonded shirt under their uniform will be issued a uniform demerit and will be required to remove the item and hand the item to staff. The clothing will be held in the front office as a confiscated item. Replacement clothing will be provided to students so they are kept warm and the costs of this will appear on your school fee statement.
As the weather warms students are permitted to wear either their summer or winter uniform - but not a combination of both.
A reminder also that excess or unacceptable jewellery will also be confiscated and a uniform demerit will be issued. These items will be held securely at the front office.
Any items confiscated can be collected by students at the end of the term. Alternatively parents or carers may collect the item from the office should they wish to do so.
Thank you to parents and carers for the ongoing support of school policy.

RESULTS
This term, 14 students from St Joseph’s Catholic High School prepared and presented solutions in the South Coast Tournament of Minds Competition at the University of Wollongong. Two teams competed in STEM and Arts categories.
ARTS TEAM
Lauren Clancy
Harvey Andrews
Lucas Thompson
Emma Schulz
Ruby Oliver
River Jardim
Lara Wishart
STEM TEAM
Isabelle Plattner
Cooper Reay
Kailtyn Michlmayr
Neave Keenan
Alex Bierczynski
James Windle
Harry Barnett
The Stem team presented their challenge including a wonderful machine constructed by the group which rotated to collect DNA samples from 5 endangered species. Unfortunately, they did not achieve a place in the competition results despite a strong attempt.
The Arts team, however, presented their challenge as outlined below. They performed a highly entertaining response to the challenge using the local suburb as the context for a new Wizard of Aus. A comedy element and polished quality resulted in a WIN for this team over Corpus Christi, Nowra and Smiths Hill High Schools.
Wizard of Aus Challenge
INTRODUCTION
The Wizard of Oz is a story where the characters go in search of things they desire. The Tin Man is searching for a heart, the Lion wants courage, the Scarecrow needs a brain and Dorothy wants to go home. They come across hurdles such as the Wicked Witch and need to work together as a team to get away.
CHALLENGE
You will be rewriting The Wizard of Oz as if it is set in your State, Territory or Country. You need to choose where your ‘Yellow Brick Road” will start and end and who your characters will be. What hurdles will your characters come across and how will they overcome them? Your team needs to choose an overarching concept for your presentation, for example, power, faith, resilience, perspective or growth (but not limited to these). Students will use creative backdrops showing the scene of the story include justification of the choice of concept to guide the presentation, use at least two original songs that are relevant to the story and explain each character’s chosen desire, and the challenges they had to face and overcome as well as the reasons for their inclusion.
The Win for the Arts team means they will now compete at the State TOMs Championship with a new 3 hour challenge and another Spontaneous Challenge at the University of NSW in Sydney on September 15.
We would like to thank Miss Swift, Mr Ie and Mr Lemmon for their support in the preparation of both teams this year.

The team consisted of Lori Schloeffel (Year 9), Emma Schoeffel (Year 12), Daniella Avtarovski (Year 8), Myra Apps (Year 11), Kaitlyn Fleming (Year 11), Ruby Sawtell (Year 11), Jessica Pateman (Year 11), Molly Sumner (Year 11), Lilli Staff (Year 11) and Caitlyn Brabender (Year 11).
The team played well coming away with a number of wins against strong opposition. The girls should be congratulated on their sportsmanship and the way they represented the St Joseph’s school community.
HOCKEY GALA DAY
Congratulations to our hockey teams on their efforts and results last Wednesday at the Diocesan Hockey Gala Day.
Boys placed equal 1st and the girls placed 3rd!!
Girls
On Wednesday the 28th of August both the boys and the girls hockey team travelled up to Narellan to verse schools from around the diocese. The girls were very enthusiastic and were all excited to show the other schools what Joeys could give. After a loud, music filled trip up, the girls got ready for their first game against St. Patricks. Although losing 0-1, the girls showed determination and teamwork throughout their defence which pushed the ambition to achieve better results in the following games.
The girl’s second game against Mount Carmel proved their abilities when they took out a 1-0 win. Makiya, a young but powerful junior student scoring the winning goal. This game boosted the girls confidence and allowed them to come together as a team to achieve more wins throughout the day.
Game three against John Therry saw the Joeys girls take out a 6-0 win with goal scorers Zali Schofield (2), Taylah Vella, Makiya Shaw, Taylah Gilbert and Rylee Goodman each hitting the back of the net. Throughout the day it was great to see the junior and senior students working together as a team and displaying great leadership skills which improved each players performance.
The girl’s fourth game was a very important game to them as it was a local derby against Corpus Christi. Although faced with some great talent, our girls were able to seal a 4-0 win with Grace Shaw (2), Zali Schofield and Taylah Vella each scoring. This game put our girls 2nd in our pool and progressed the girls to the semifinals against St Mary’s.
Knowing this game would be a challenge, the girls put on brave faces and did not go down without a fight. Despite losing 1-0, our girls proved that St. Joseph’s were serious competitors and were able to hold out any more goals.
The loss allowed the girls to play off for 3rd position against Magdalene which they smashed 2-0. Again the junior pocket rocket Zali Schofield finding 2 goals and sealing our 3rd place spot.
As a team we would like to thank Mrs Davis and Mr Armstrong for organising the teams and allowing us to travel up to Narellan. The senior girls were very happy with our results for our last sports carnival representing the school and know that the rising leaders will allow the team to continue to achieve great results.
Team List: Zoe Parkes, Zali Markwell, Katie Saunders, Taylah Gilbert, Taylah Vella, Rylee Goodman, Claudia Castelli, Grace Shaw, Paige Dole, Lilli Jones, Makiya Shaw, Zali Schofield, Charlee Buckman, Jazmin Jensen, Tatum Sawtell
Katie Saunders, Year 12.
Boys
On Wednesday the 28th of August, the Opens Boys Hockey team travelled to Narellan to take part in the Dicesean Championship Day. An early wake up had some feeling lethargic on the hour and a half bus trip. However, with half of the team consisting of year 12 students they were eager to finish with a good day. None expected the boys to come out on top.
The first game was played was against Holy Spirit and ended in a convincing 4-0 victory. With this being the first match the team had played together it was great to see that we came away with a victory. An early explosion of energy meant the team went up 1-0 within 2 minutes and from there it was all Joeys. Scoring a further 3 in quick succession. With the win wrapped up, it was great to see that the players with no hockey experience were able to contribute.
The next match was against St John’s, last years finalists. It was going to be a tough match up, however, the boys again played extremely well, winning 1-0. Another opportunity for the team to get some consistency going into the play off for the No 1 in our pool.
The match up was against a strong Mt Carmel outfit, also determined to be top of the pool. A great match that ended in a 0-0 draw. Both teams fought hard and had plenty of chances to take the lead. This draw meant that the St Joseph’s team finished top of the pool. Qualifying for the semi finals against 2nd in the opposing pool. This lined us up against Edmund Rice, who had defeated Joeys last year.
A tough match-up meant we had to be on top of our game. Going up 1-0 within 7 minutes with what was seen by many as the play of the day - a long pass towards Joel Dowling who left it for Jaiden Ketteringham to finish off in front of goal. We conceded a goal late in the match and the fixture finishing 1-1. However due to our higher placed finish we advanced onto the final. Setting up a grudge match against Corpus Christi.
This match was to be the toughest yet with fatigue well and truly set in. Corpus scored midway through the match to put them up 1-0. A loss looming meant Joeys had to find something from within. With 3 minutes on the clock we had locked the ball in our attacking third. Piling on pressure the ball fell in the perfect spot and we were lucky enough for the opportunity to be taken. With the match finishing 1-1, meaning Corpus and Joeys were crowned joint winners. A fantastic result for a team with over half a team of non-hockey players.
Mentions of the day go out to Robert Frew, for his crucial defensive efforts in the final and Byron Buckman in goals saving the team on multiple occasions. Lucas Thompson and Tom Eastham had a magnificent tournament and with players like Makye Williams and Josh Miller the future of Hockey at Joey’s is in safe hands.
Jack Eastham and Callum Barton thoroughly deserve accolades for leading the side in their final year. Special mention must also be given to Connor McAlister, Darcy Grimson, Jaiden Ketteringham and Joel Dowling (Ms.) who were outstanding performers for the team even though they had never played hockey previously.
Callum Barton - Year 12.
Team List:
Callum Barton, Jack Eastham, Joel Dowling, Darcy Grimson, Connor McAlister, Jaiden Ketteringham, Byron Buckman, Tom Eastham, Makye Williams, Robert Frew, Lucas Thompson, Joshua Miller.

This is a COMPULSORY school excursion full of fun activities that is focused on the development of a range of skills such as team building and problem solving. The activities are designed to challenge the students to step out of their comfort zone in a controlled environment and to develop ongoing and new friendships with their peers.
It is so pleasing to see that over half of the year group have brought their notes in. This is a reminder for the remaining students to return the permission booklet containing the permission note and medical forms. Students who have lost their notes can collect new ones from the front office.
Please be advised we have a confirmed case of Chickenpox in the school.
Attached is a Fact Sheet on Chickenpox for your attention.

THE NET TEAM National Evangelisation Teams Australia (NET) do incredible work in Australia and around our Diocese, bringing young people to an encounter with God’s love. The NET Team will be visiting Albion Park Parish on 21 September for the 6pm Vigil Mass. This will be an opportunity for the youth of the parish looking to deepen their faith and have a relationship with Jesus to meet with other young people who will share with them their love of the Lord.
