Welcome back to Semester Two. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to ‘reset’ for a new reporting period. I encourage all students to set goals and work towards the best possible learning outcomes they can achieve. Next week we are launching the Aspiring /Elite Athlete program followed by the Elite Academic program. I am very excited by the opportunities that these programs will offer the students of St Joseph’s. So keep an eye out for all details coming your way.
On Monday’s assembly I spoke to students about the responsibility of being a member of the community. Every student should be able to come to school and talk to whoever they want to. I believe that we only have a handful of close friends but have lots of acquaintances. This enriches our lives so we need to be open and engaging with everyone who comes into our sphere in a classroom and be discerning with our relationships. Over a 1000 Facebook or Insta friends are not our nearest and dearest - they are just people who we are acquainted with - we need to invest in our face to face relationships with casual conversations and just even acknowledging others with a hello. So that is the challenge I put to all students - know the people in your class better and give everyone an opportunity to know you better as well.

ENGLISH FACULTY NEWS
What Matters Writing Competition
In English classes, students from Years 7 – 10 were required to write a text or composition on a personal issue that was important to them.
Some of these texts were then entered in the Whitlam Institute ‘What Matters?’ writing competition. What Matters? is a 'catalyst for young thinkers and young writers to develop a perspective, a point of view, on where we're heading as a society'. The aim of this contest is to give young adults a voice in determining Australia’s future.
Of the 4,500 students who entered this contest, one of our Year 10 students was shortlisted for her creative composition.
Congratulations to Mia Ketteringham, whose piece entitled Fade In was selected as one of the shortlisted entries.

He did well achieving all new PBs in his 7 individual races with a silver medal in his 200m Backstroke and was a finalist in 6 races.
He also competed in 2 club relays where his team won 2 gold medals for the 4 x 50m freestyle relay and the 4 x 50 medley relay.
Well done Matt!

Fee-free Apprenticeships
There’s never been a better time to start an apprenticeship in NSW. The NSW Government is paying the course cost for 100,000 new apprenticeships – meaning students no longer face a qualification fee of up to $2000.
Apprenticeships are a great career pathway. They combine on-the-job training with classroom study to give you the skills and experience employers are looking for. Apprenticeships generally take around 3-4 years to complete, and apprentices earn a salary while they learn.
There are more than 120 different apprenticeship courses available in NSW, in a range of industries including construction, cooking, aviation and automotive.
