Dear Parents and Carers,
As a school community, we are very pleased and looking forward to all students returning to school on Monday, 25May.
We trust that all students will be pleased to be back in the classroom learning with all of the benefits of face to face teaching. During Week 5, teachers will be consolidating the learning outcomes previously delivered during remote delivery as well as delivering new content as applicable.
Students will be following their new Term 2 timetables accessible on Compass. As previously communicated, we need to limit the amount of movement around the school. Students will have three learning sessions per day and teachers will move to the students. To facilitate this, we have reduced the number of different class groupings of Years 7-10 students, and therefore they will find that some of their classes and teachers have changed.
We also have other systems in place to ensure that your children are safe at school. This includes all staff members taking disinfectant, paper towel and sanitiser supplies to classrooms so that every student has a clean desk and can sanitise their hands upon entry to every learning session. At this stage, the canteen will be open for online orders only to avoid congested lines at the canteen area. An email has been sent to students today - please ask your child to check this so they are aware of the arrangements and expectations for Monday.
We will commence next week with a full school assembly via Zoom with students in their Homeroom classrooms with their Homeroom Teacher. Expectations for students around safety, hygiene and behaviours which are COVID-safe will be communicated to students, including the process for borrowing handballs at recess and at lunchtime. These will be disinfected after each meal break. Sports equipment is not permitted to be brought to school by students. Reminders will also be given for students to frequently wash and sanitise their hands and not to share food and drinks with others.
Last week, on their respective days at school students were reminded that all students are expected to be wear correct school uniform each day. In particular, if parents could please ensure that your child is adhering to the following school uniform regulations:
- Students are to wear plain white socks with the sports uniform
- Boys are to wear their school trousers and the school tie
- Girls are to wear the correct opaque black tights
- A plain white undergarment is permitted to be worn as an extra layer for warmth
- Blazers are to be worn to and from school every day
- One earring in each ear
- Facial piercings are not permitted
- Black socks, Converse, Vans and other canvas shoes are not permitted to be worn.
Students will be advised at the Zoom Assembly on Monday to rectify any areas of incorrect uniform by next Wednesday, 27 May, when we will recommence issuing playground withdrawals for incorrect uniform. As always, your support in ensuring that your child is correctly attired for school each day is greatly appreciated. If your child is in Years 7 or 11 and you have not yet been able to make the necessary arrangements to collect their uniform orders, if you could please contact Ms Liesle Granzien at the Uniform Shop as soon as possible on 0413441892. Please also provide a note of explanation in your child’s diary to notify their Homeroom Teacher of these circumstances.
It is great to see so many St Joseph’s students and staff participating in the Race Around Australia organised by our wonderful PDHPE Faculty. Please encourage your child to get involved in this healthy initiative.
Should you have any questions about your child’s learning progress since we have been learning remotely please encourage them to speak to their teacher and do not hesitate to contact their PALS Teacher if additional support is required.
Wishing everyone a very peaceful and restful weekend!

CURRICULUM NEWS
We are very much looking forward to having all students return to regular classes next week (Week 5). We would like to congratulate the efforts of the vast majority of students who have undertaken the process of remote learning with great enthusiasm and also recognise the efforts of parents and carers in supporting these students during this time as well.
HSC Update
A number of changes have been made regarding this years HSC and requirements for certain subjects - in particular practical subjects. Year 12 students have been emailed a summary flyer outlining these changes.
New Timetable
Students are returning with a new school timetable in place. This timetable sees the school moving to double lessons for all subjects (Yrs 7-12), in some cases new teachers for Years 7-10 and more flexible attendance options for seniors to assist in the completion of major projects, catching up on missed work etc. Students will be issued paper copies of their timetable next week when they return. The new timetable can already be viewed on Compass (Student Schedules).
Changes to Assessment
Due to remote learning, schools have been given the provision to make changes to student assessment schedules where required. We are currently in the process of updating our assessment schedules for Years 7-12 and will publish these as soon as possible.
Plagiarism
We have noticed an increase in use of plagiarism for formal assessment tasks. According to Wikipedia "Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work". In its basic form it is copying someone else's work eg: copy from a website, and paste it into your own task and submit as your work. It is unethical and does not assist in determining the students understanding of a particular topic. We are reviewing our approach towards this matter but in the meantime, it may be worthwhile discussing this matter with your child and look at their approaches towards completing formal assessments and other allocated class tasks.
Communication between Teachers, Students and Parents
With the switch to remote learning, students have become more aware of the need to regularly check their email accounts in order to communicate effectively with their teachers and to receive updates around school processes etc. In saying this, we are aware that there are a number of students, and in some cases, parents, who have not accessed their emails or replied to teacher concerns about issues such as completion of work. Communication between all parties is a vital part of the education process and we would strongly encourage students and their parents to get into the habit of regularly checking their emails to stay up to date with communications from the class teacher. Also, a reminder to please ensure the school office has updated contact details including home phone, mobile and email addresses and please ensure you have access to the Compass app.
Subject Selection 2021
We are currently in the beginning stages of putting selection processes and information together for students entering Year 11 2021, as well as electives in Year 9 and Year 10 2021. Due to current social distancing restrictions, we are looking to move to an entirely online process this year. We hope to have this finalised before the end of the term. Please continue to read Compass notifications and emails for updates.
Any questions or emails regarding curriculum matters, please feel free to contact the Curriculum Office at any time.
Mr Brett Moran
Curriculum Coordinator
Welcome to the May edition of the Joey’s Careers Corner. It has been a very busy couple weeks of engaging with all students remotely and we look forward to having all back onsite in week 5.
Week 4 was National Careers Week and all years 10,11 and 12 students had the opportunity to participate in a virtual careers expo through Year 13. Students were able to hear from experts, chat with influencers and explore exhibitors from a range or University, TAFE’s, Employers and Gap Year providers. It was a great format and I am sure students will use what they have learnt to follow their passion beyond school. For more information on year 12 ‘MyFuture’ webinars, students have been emailed a term 2 schedual.
As students return to face to face teaching the Careers, TAPS and VET coordinators will continue to work with students, particularly in year 12 at this time, to ensure we can prepare them for post school options. For those students considering University, UAC preferences are now open, earlybird preferences will continue until 30th of September. UAC recently presented Live information sessions via Instagram Live and Facebook Live for Year 12 students wishing to apply to universities and their response to COVID-19. I would also encourage all future university students to check these out, so that you are informed about changes to NESA and university admissions. Finally we encourage students and parents who wish to discuss their future pathways to make contact with the Careers team.
Thank you
