It was a joy to see the students and staff in their sporting gear today. It is so good to have fun and to be able to laugh together and raise money for a good cause. Thank you to our Year 12 leaders for organising this.
When our young people look at the news and social media feeds they are seeing some very dark times. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the main news story at the moment and pay particular attention to our own country. Over many years many people have been working for equality for the first Australians, this is not a new argument. The Australian and American story and culture are different - we need to acknowledge and look for solutions, not only around policing issues of the number of Indigenous Australians in custody, or the number of deaths in custody, but also the health crisis for Indigenous Australians and then the educational disadvantage. These all need to be addressed, but at the bottom of it all is a fundamental acknowledgement of the dignity of the human person.
In the eyes of God we are all equal. Racism takes many forms, it is the bias viewpoint that doesn’t change, it is the judgement of a whole group of people of having particular characteristics, rather than focus on an individual. It is the subtle name calling in terms of put downs. It is acknowledging that there are other ways to learn and it is all about what we value as individuals and what is important to us. We need a true Reconciliation. Our young people need to have a voice and if they feel strongly about something, to act in a productive way to make change - but it starts with them not being racist and to acknowledge their personal bias and work to overcome that, to write to politicians, to write to the media, to access the correct and true information in government reports rather than relying on a media interpretation of events. to do your fact checking, to support causes in a peaceful and positive way and to show older generations another way of doing things. COVID19 has not gone away - everyone has a responsibility to make it safe for others and there are many ways to have your voice heard.
Our young people need to be educated in history - to understand the past is to be able to plan a positive future and not make the same mistakes, our young people need to be educated in mathematics and sciences to develop medical solutions for a range of issues, to be engineers and inventors to create sustainable change, Our young people need to be educated in all aspects to be ethical business people of the future, our young people need to be educated in spirituality to develop compassion and understanding of others and tolerance of difference. Our young people need to be beacons of hope as we move forward through the challenging times as there are some wonderful things that are in our world - friendship, love and laughter. Our young people need to be the leaders that bring hope, peace and understanding for all people.

Parent Teacher Interviews - Year 11 and Year 12
Year 11 and 12 Parent-Teacher Interviews - Tuesday 9 June
Parent-Teacher Interviews for Stage 6 students will be held next Tuesday (9 June - Week 7). Due to current social distancing restrictions, we will be trialling a new approach by Zoom.
Information was sent out via compass this week and can also be found here:
A couple of things to note:
- Parents are requested to make an appointment with staff they wish to talk to view Compass (refer to parent information sheet regarding how to make bookings)
- Staff will give priority to parents waiting that have made an appointment. Due to limited time staff may not be able to connect with parents that have not made an appointment. If this is the case you are welcome to contact the teacher and make an alternate time to catch up during school hours
- Staff have been advised to keep interviews to a maximum of 7 minutes. This is to allow staff time to end the interview and begin their next interview. If this is not enough time to discuss the progress of your child you are again welcome to make another time to continue the discussion during school hours.
- Be aware all meetings are recorded by default on Zoom. To start the interview you will be required to start the video for each conference you have. This is so staff are can see who they are meeting with.
- As this is the first time we have implemented this process for interviews we are asking staff to complete a short survey on the process at the completion of your last meeting to enable us to determine how effective the process has been and any tips to improve for future. We thank you in advance for your support of this process.
CURRICULUM NEWS
Minimum Standards Testing
This week we have continued the rollout of HSC Minimum Standards Testing with Yr 10. Students who did not complete the Writing Test, held earlier in Term 1, have re-sat the test today. Numeracy and Reading tests will be completed before the end of Term 2. For students in Yrs 11 and 12 who are required to complete aspects of the test still, support will be arranged for these students in coming weeks with the view to scheduling another opportunity to sit these tests before the end of the term.
2021 Subject Selection Process
We are currently in the final stages of preparing our subject selection processes and resources for electives in 2021. This includes students progressing from Yr 10 to Yr 11 as well as electives in Yrs 9 and 10.
Due to current social restrictions, we have needed to adapt our usual process. Instead on an information night for parents and students, we are moving to an online process. Each KLA is currently creating a series of short videos for the subjects we will be offering. These videos will be placed on our school website along with a range of other resources. When completed students and parents will be able to access this information in their own time to assist with the process of subject selection.
We hope to have this process available before the end of the term. Yr 10 will be required to submit their selections for Yr 11 2021 in early Term 3. Yrs 8 and 9 will then follow with their selections in the first weeks of Term 3. More detail will be provided as it becomes available.
Any questions or issues regarding curriculum matters feel free to contact the Curriculum Office at any time.
