Shellharbour Reconciliation Flag Walk 2022
Today Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal students attend the Reconciliation Flag Walk at Lake Illawarra. We participated as a community in a walk, symbolising uniting. Each school was presented with a flag, which would be presented to an Elder or Community Representative during the ceremony. We had Jazmin and Miah participate in the flag ceremony. We were able to watch Gamarra Perform and listen to speeches by community members. The ceremony was followed by a sausage sizzle which everyone enjoyed. As a community enjoyed this event, recognising this year's theme ‘Be Brave, Make Change’.

On Friday 20th May, St Joseph's Catholic High School and St Paul's Catholic Primary School participated in the 'Laying of Hands Ceremony' with Uncle Kevin Butler. Uncle Kevin has been painting a mural of the Rainbow Serpent to be displayed on our new shared cultural room 'Mudjungaal Kullilla' (Friends Meeting Place). We as a school community were very excited to share this experience with all our Aboriginal students, parents and staff from both schools. This is a symbol of our strong community that we share, coming together to rejoice in culture. The ceremony was followed by a morning tea where all the students had the opportunity to get to know one another. We look forwards to holding more events together and share our culture in the future.

Sincerely,
The Indigenous Education Team at St Joseph's.
