St Joseph’s Day activities are important in a holistic development of students. Why? Because it gives opportunities for senior students to lead their peers. It provides an opportunity for interacting with different people, not just your friendship group, in a casual setting and lastly, it is the opportunity for ‘play’. Play is important whether you are a child or an adult. Play for adults is often sport or even a reason why fantasy movies get such a following, as they are playful. Creative free play is one of the strongest ways of developing children. Unfortunately the research is not so positive about play with screen time.
St Joseph was the earthly father for Jesus. He was the protector and followed God’s instruction in taking Mary on, with trust. In the Bible, Joseph is the strong, silent type; no words are attributed to him, but he was a constant, and Jesus and Mary could trust in him to look after them. Today being true to your word is just as important. To be there for your family and friends whilst being true to yourself. So I hope everyone has an excellent St Joseph’s Activity Day.
Congratulations to Ms Behl as we hosted the Diocesan Environmental Network Meeting. Our students have worked hard to establish an excellent bin system and encourage all students to always follow the directions and not get lazy with rubbish. Rubbish and how we dispose of it, can affect our environment in a very negative manner.
Mrs Bell and I went to a Strategic Planning Day for the school on Wednesday, and I am pleased to say we are definitely on track with improvements in learning, facilities and the grounds. I am pleased to see the engagement in the classrooms with the content, and the increased knowledge of staff about their students and their learning needs.
The Year Coordinators are currently engaging in checking in with every student over the next few weeks, identifying their support networks, needs and what their goals are for learning. This data will then help inform the resilience program in the school.
Assessments and report writing is coming up, and all students have the opportunity to grow and develop each semester. We will also be reviewing student grades and growth, and making sure that students are pushed outside their comfort zone - as that is the only way you can develop your learning!

PROJECT COMPASSION UPDATE

During Lent, students were asked to bring in donations to place in their homeroom’s project compassion box to help raise awareness and come together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. Along with the project compassion boxes the SRC held fundraisers for Valentines Day and testing out their new fairy floss machine with all proceeds going to the lenten fundraiser. All together the students raised $2,065.35, which is an outstanding effort. Thank you to everyone who donated money or their time to raise funds for this great cause.
VINNIES WINTER APPEAL

St Joseph’s will again this year be holding a Vinnies winter appeal. Each year, during winter, St Josephs supports our local Vinnies van by collecting non-perishable food items which can be used to feed some of our most vulnerable community members. In the 2017-18 financial year, the Vinnies Van provided more than 16,500 meals and a range of essential items to support those in need. The service also helps foster connections between clients and other support services through referrals.
We encourage every student to bring in at least one food item to go towards our donation to help this service. Food required by the Vinnies van includes pasta and other food sauces, pasta, rice, tinned tomato, corn, vegetables, sugar, tea and coffee, long life milk or any non-perishable food items that they can use to create a hot meal.
YEAR 11 2020 SUBJECT INFORMATION EVENING - TUESDAY 4th JUNE 2019
On Tuesday Evening 4th June we will be holding the Year 11 2020 Subject Information Evening in the school Gym commencing at 6 pm. It is an expectation that all Year 10 students will attend this evening with at least one parent. Students are required to wear school uniform.
Yesterday, Year 11 students and parents were emailed the Subject Selection Handbook containing information and course outlines. It is recommended that students take some time over the weekend to possibly plan a draft pattern of study, including back up courses and bring this information on Tuesday evening so that you can attend the information sessions for the subjects you are interested in.
Year_11_2020_Subject_Information_Handbook_Final.pdf
At this evening, students and parents will be provided with information regarding Stage 6 Courses and they will have the opportunity to listen to presentations from all Faculties in the subject areas that they are interested in. Further to this evening, students will have the opportunity to attend lunchtime information sessions, which will be communicated to students next week, to address any questions or concerns they have with their subject selection. Students are also strongly encouraged to speak with KLA Coordinators and the Curriculum Office for enquiries around their selected pattern of study for Stage 6.
Subject selection will be an online process commencing Tuesday 11th June. Information will be released to all students about this process next week via email.

NAPLAN ONLINE 2019
Congratulations to all Year 7 and Year 9 students who successfully completed NAPLAN Online over the past 2 weeks. Our school coped extremely well with the online platform, only having issues on the very first day which was experienced by all schools. Credit must be given to our IT Department, namely Mr Danny Casolin, Ms Sandra Ward and Mr Cameron Dribbus who ensured that our school network was well in line to handle the capacity of download required for the tests. NAPLAN results will be distributed to Year 7 and Year 9 students as soon as available. The expectation is early Term 3.
YEAR 9 AND YEAR 10 HALF-YEARLY EXAMS
Year 9 and Year 10 students will sit half-yearly exams in Week 7 commencing Tuesday 11th June. Students will be issued with an exam timetable next week. Some exams will take place during normal timetabled class periods but exams for Religion, Science, HSIE and Mathematics will take place in the Gym as whole cohort exams.
From the Administration Office
- Students will this week be issued with an order envelope.
- Photos can be ordered online (saves sending cash to school) by visiting the secure online advancedorderweb portal specifically set up for St Joseph's. Visit website advancedlife.com.au or the advancedaccess dashboard if you have previously set it up. Note our school online code is EYT LFZ GBV. These details can be found on the order envelopes as well.
- If you place an order order online you do not need to return the order envelope or send any money to school.
- We ask that if you are paying by cash your child brings the order envelope and required monies with them on the day and hand to the photographers when they get their photo taken. Please do not send to school earlier. The school is unable to take cash payments on behalf of the photographer.
- Students are to wear full school uniform on the day (there will be no PE practical classes on the day). This includes blazers for all students and ties for the boys (with top button done up). As the photos are used for ID purposes students need to have hair tied back off their face as well. Other school uniform requirements will be strictly enforced such as earrings (number and size) as well as no facial piercings and the wearing of makeup. Students not meeting these expectations will not have their photo taken until they meet these expectations. Your support regarding this matter is greatly appreciated.
- Sibling/Family photos may be ordered online using the same details as above. To assist with organisation the cut off time for ordering sibling/family photos will be 11:59pm the day prior to photo day (Monday 24th June).
- A schedule for the day will be distributed to students closer to the day. Students who arrive late or need to leave early are asked to advise the school office as soon as possible so alternative arrangements can be made. If you are absent or miss your scheduled photo time, then you can still have your photo taken on the catch up day (Wednesday 24th).
- Traditionally families ordering photos receive a package that includes a portrait of each student in your child's year group. Student portraits are also published each year in the school year book. In 2019 the CEO have directed that we obtain permission from parents to publish photos in these settings as well as others (eg school website and social media). A recent audit shows most families have not returned the permission to use image form issued at the start of the year. Another copy of this consent note will be distributed with your child's payment envelope. A copy is also included in this newsletter, as well as emailed home. To allow your child's portrait to be included in the year group collage distributed as part of the school photo packages as well as in the school Year Book we need this form returned prior to photo day. Students not returning the consent form will not have their photos included in either of these settings. This form must be returned by all students, regardless if previous consent has been provided.
Any questions or issues relating to photo day please feel free to contact me here at school.

SCHOOL MUSICAL - YOU'RE HISTORY!
It’s that time of year again when out talented students and staff present our annual school musical. This your it is ‘You’re History’ – a nerdy teenager turns a portable classroom into a time machine and the detention class is sent hurtling back through history! The time-warped team discover vicious Vikings, pilates-practicing Pirates, disco-happy Gladiators, a rapping Romeo and Juliet and the infamous Oedipus on an episode of ‘Ellen’, with overtones of Jerry Springer.
With parallels between hierarchical history & today’s schoolyard, here is a rollicking musical chock-full of wonderful characters, historical mayhem and sensational songs.
Ticket are on sale 1st June available through Trybooking. You can access tickets via the link below.

YEAR 12 HOSPITALITY
Mr Ferderer's Year 12 Hospitality class have been learning some baking skills The class produced an impressive array of breads. The doughs were made in a single period, then left to proove over night in the fridge. In the double practical lesson the class knocked back the dough, cut, weighed portions of the doughs and shaped the various doughs into different shapes and sizes. Plain basic buns, plaits & twists, scrolls and snail shapes were all successfully completed within a class and industry time frame. The class of eight made: walnut and honey bread, cheese and chilli buns (Ian Hewitson's recipe), pizza dough slabs, poppyseed and garlic naan bread. The breads were enjoyed by the staff who made donations to this terms nominated charity. This class should feel very proud of their achievements in the course.
YEAR 11 HOSPITALITY
Year 11 Hospitality students spent last week on work placement in a variety of establishments that prepare and serve food to the general public. All students completed 35+ hours over the week, some working day and night shifts and on Saturday as well. The feedback that I received was extremely positive of all my students. Some students were offered part time / casual work and some were offered Chefs apprenticeships. The students gained invaluable experience in a variety of establishments from small cafes to large club/banqueting kitchens to IRT Food Services catering for 5000 meals a day. The students performed a wide range of tasks including-basic vegetable and fruit misc en place (preparations), crumbing of assorted foods, garlic bread production, desserts and cakes. Some were were shown FOH operations and how to use an expresso machine. The students feedback to me this week was very positive as well as being a realistic observation of this industry.

WORK EXPERIENCE RECOUNT
Last Monday, on the 20th of May my work experience week commenced at Wollongong Hospital. I felt so ready and prepared because I knew that I was going to get a wonderful experience out of this to wrap my head around my aspired career as a paramedic that can potentially begin in nursing. My first day started off with an induction alongside 8 lovely beautiful girls from different schools all across the district. After the induction finished we all got directed to our wards, my first ward luckily was the children's ward! which was reviewed as one of the favourite wards by previous students completing this health care worker program. Throughout my week the wards I visited were as follows children's ward, rehabilitation, and palliative care, renal dialysis, general surgical and general medical. I was privileged enough to receive an offer to attend a day at the renal dialysis ward as it is one of the newer wards at the hospital. Overall, it was an experience that opened many doors for me for any future endeavors I may encounter.
The activities I got to participate in were very rewarding since I got a feeling of accomplishment after each one of them. On the second day, I visited Rehabilitation and palliative care; I was lucky enough to be partnered with a lovely (AIN) which simply means that she was an assistant nurse who showed me around and taught me some jobs that she does in her everyday life. She opened my eyes to a new pathway that I never thought I would be considering in taking a part of throughout my high school education. Hopefully, with all my best wishes, I am willing to study at TAFE to become an assistant in nursing throughout my senior years. My future career plans include attending the University of Wollongong to pursue a career to become a registered nurse. I feel that St Josephs has given me many opportunities to accomplish and develop my ideas into reality. Anyone who is looking to pursue a career in medicine whether that be as a nurse, paramedic, heart surgeon doctor, and so on I believe that this health care program is the most fulfilling an eyeopening experience that you will not remorse because there are plenty of opportunities to have a chat with anyone who works in the areas you are interested in. My feedback from the nurses and educators helped me gain that confidence, that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to. So my advice to anyone who is looking to enroll for this program I 100% guarantee you will not regret it, at the end of this program you will receive a certificate that indicates that you completed the course successfully, this can be used as a reference for any future resumes for any future jobs, not just in this area but I am certain that you will receive something like this throughout a variety of different experiences.
