This has been another busy week at St Joseph's with students in various years involved in final preparations for the school musical, You’re History. This requires a huge commitment outside of school hours, including weekends, for staff and students alike, and their generous giving of their own time and talents is greatly appreciated. All members of the school community are encouraged to support those involved in the show by purchasing tickets for the musical, as it is certainly shaping up to be another fabulous community event.
The school acknowledged Reconciliation Week with a School Reconciliation Assembly on Monday, 3rd June. This assembly was well organised by our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Coordinator, Mr Kane Brown and during the assembly Mr Stephen Jones MP presented the school with three new flags which will be prominently placed in the school's grounds in due course.
On Friday 7th June, the Athletics Carnival was held at Croome Road Sporting Complex, with students demonstrating fine school spirit by participating to a high level in all activities. We were blessed with beautiful sunshine and warm weather which, combined with the hard work of the carnival organisers Mr Brian Hetherington, Mrs Natalie Behl and the PDHPE Staff, contributed to making this an excellent and very successful community day.
Thank you to Year 10 parents and carers who attended the Year 11, 2020 Information Night on Tuesday evening this week. We trust that Year 10 students are now well on their way to finalising their course selections for Year 11 as required. Please do not hesitate to contact the Curriculum Coordinator, Ms Sarah-Jane Janson if you need any further information or advice to assist with this process.
Students have again been reminded this week that wearing non - school uniform items is not permitted at school. Students are permitted to wear a black or blue scarf, and winter uniform must include long pants for boys and the regulation opaque black school tights when the skirt is worn by girls. Students are permitted to wear one earring in each ear and facial piercings are not permitted.
All students have agreed to abide by our school uniform regulations upon enrolment at the school. We would greatly appreciate the support of all parents by checking that your child is correctly attired for school each day.
Last weekend at Mass we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost and below is a reflective prayer for this time in our Church.
May the Gifts of the Holy Spirit bring fire to the earth
so that the presence of God may be seen
in a new light, in new places, in new ways.
May our own hearts burst into flame
so that no obstacle, no matter how great,
ever obstructs the message of the God within each of us.
May we come to trust the Word of God in our heart,
to speak it with courage, to follow it faithfully and to fan it to flame in others.

VINNIES WINTER APPEAL

We encourage every student to bring in at least one food item to go towards our donation to help this service. Food required by the Vinnies van includes pasta and other food sauces, pasta, rice, tinned tomato, corn, vegetables, sugar, tea and coffee, long life milk or any non-perishable food items that they can use to create a hot meal.
This initiative will end at the end of week 9.
From the Administration Office
- Students will this week be issued with an order envelope.
- Photos can be ordered online (saves sending cash to school) by visiting the secure online advancedorderweb portal specifically set up for St Joseph's. Visit website advancedlife.com.au or the advancedaccess dashboard if you have previously set it up. Note our school online code is EYT LFZ GBV. These details can be found on the order envelopes as well.
- If you place an order order online you do not need to return the order envelope or send any money to school.
- We ask that if you are paying by cash your child brings the order envelope and required monies with them on the day and hand to the photographers when they get their photo taken. Please do not send to school earlier. The school is unable to take cash payments on behalf of the photographer.
- Students are to wear full school uniform on the day (there will be no PE practical classes on the day). This includes blazers for all students and ties for the boys (with top button done up). As the photos are used for ID purposes students need to have hair tied back off their face as well. Other school uniform requirements will be strictly enforced such as earrings (number and size) as well as no facial piercings and the wearing of makeup. Students not meeting these expectations will not have their photo taken until they meet these expectations. Your support regarding this matter is greatly appreciated.
- Sibling/Family photos may be ordered online using the same details as above. To assist with organisation the cut off time for ordering sibling/family photos will be 11:59pm the day prior to photo day (Monday 24th June).
- A schedule for the day will be distributed to students closer to the day. Students who arrive late or need to leave early are asked to advise the school office as soon as possible so alternative arrangements can be made. If you are absent or miss your scheduled photo time, then you can still have your photo taken on the catch up day (Wednesday 24th).
- Traditionally families ordering photos receive a package that includes a portrait of each student in your child's year group. Student portraits are also published each year in the school year book. In 2019 the CEO have directed that we obtain permission from parents to publish photos in these settings as well as others (eg school website and social media). A recent audit shows most families have not returned the permission to use image form issued at the start of the year. Another copy of this consent note will be distributed with your child's payment envelope. A copy is also included in this newsletter, as well as emailed home. To allow your child's portrait to be included in the year group collage distributed as part of the school photo packages as well as in the school Year Book we need this form returned prior to photo day. Students not returning the consent form will not have their photos included in either of these settings. This form must be returned by all students, regardless if previous consent has been provided.
Any questions or issues relating to photo day please feel free to contact me here at school.
Mr Brett Moran

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander News
St Joseph's came together as a community to recognise National Reconciliation week. This week marks a significant part of our shared history with Australia's first people Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The theme is “Grounded in truth and walk together in courage”.
At the heart of reconciliation is the relationship between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To foster positive race relations, our relationship must be grounded in a foundation of truth.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have long called for a comprehensive process of truth-telling about Australia’s colonial history. Our nation’s past is reflected in the present, and will continue to play out in future unless we heal historical wounds.
We also recognise Eddie Mabo, a Torres Strait Islander man who was known for his role in campaigning for Indigenous land rights and for his role in a landmark decision of the High Court of Australia which overturned the legal doctrine of terra nullius ("nobody's land") which characterised Australian law with regard to land and title.
Many thanks to everyone involved in the assembly and morning tea afterwards.
Mr Stephen Jones MP presented us with our new school flags, and we will have them flying high on our flag poles very soon.
Our wonderful choir led the National Anthem in Aboriginal Language. We were so blessed by hearing such wonderful voices sign in our First peoples language.
All students involved were amazing for their willingness to participate in the liturgy. The many sounds, calls and circular breathe on the Didjeridu was beautiful to hear.
Thank you to Josephine Ball and Uncle Mark Mongta for coming and celebrating with us today.

SCHOOL MUSICAL - YOU'RE HISTORY!
It’s that time of year again when out talented students and staff present our annual school musical. This your it is ‘You’re History’ – a nerdy teenager turns a portable classroom into a time machine and the detention class is sent hurtling back through history! The time-warped team discover vicious Vikings, pilates-practicing Pirates, disco-happy Gladiators, a rapping Romeo and Juliet and the infamous Oedipus on an episode of ‘Ellen’, with overtones of Jerry Springer.
With parallels between hierarchical history & today’s schoolyard, here is a rollicking musical chock-full of wonderful characters, historical mayhem and sensational songs.
Ticket are on sale 1st June available through Trybooking. You can access tickets via the link below.

AMITY COLLEGE AND AFFINITY INTERCULTURAL FOUNDATION - STUDENT LEADERS IFTAR DINNER
Iftar is the meal eaten after sunset to break the fast that occurs during Ramadan and is a symbol of friendship, understanding and social harmony.
On Wednesday evening, 29 May 2019, Trent Allchin, Brooke Smith, Jennifer Klepczarek, Noah Casolin, Lleyton Mundt and Bianca Cacciola attended the IFTAR dinner at Amity College where they gathered with other students from a variety of schools along the South Coast. At the event the students experienced a variety of Middle-Eastern foods, readings and learnt about the Islamic faith. Students had the opportunity to discuss their opinions of leadership and they learnt how to embrace change whilst leading in a multicultural society. It was a great opportunity for our students to meet students from different cultural and religious backgrounds, increasing their understanding and knowledge of this significant religious practice. Thank You to Miss Adams and Miss Muniz for their assistance on the night.

WORK EXPERIENCE RECOUNT
Year Ten student Crystalina Milosvski recalls her week at Wollongong Hospital as a work Experience student.
Last Monday, on the 20th of May, my work experience week commenced at Wollongong Hospital. I felt ready and prepared because I knew that I was going to get a wonderful experience out of this to wrap my head around my aspired career as a paramedic that can potentially begin in nursing. My first day started off with an induction alongside 8 lovely beautiful girls from different schools all across the district. After the induction finished we all got directed to our wards, my first ward luckily was the children's ward! which was reviewed as one of the favourite wards by previous students completing this health care worker program. Throughout my week the wards I visited were as follows children's ward, rehabilitation, and palliative care, renal dialysis, general surgical and general medical. I was privileged enough to receive an offer to attend a day at the renal dialysis ward as it is one of the newer wards at the hospital. Overall, it was an experience that opened many doors for me for any future endeavors I may encounter. The activities I got to participate in were very rewarding since I got a feeling of accomplishment after each one of them. On the second day, I visited Rehabilitation and palliative care; I was lucky enough to be partnered with a lovely (AIN) which simply means that she was an assistant nurse who showed me around and taught me some jobs that she does in her everyday life. She opened my eyes to a new pathway that I never thought I would be considering in taking a part of throughout my high school education. Hopefully, with all my best wishes, I am willing to study at TAFE to become an assistant in nursing throughout my senior years. My future career plans include attending the University of Wollongong to pursue a career to become a registered nurse. I feel that St Josephs has given me many opportunities to accomplish and develop my ideas into reality. Anyone who is looking to pursue a career in medicine whether that be as a nurse, paramedic, heart surgeon doctor, and so on I believe that this health care program is the most fulfilling an eyeopening experience that you will not remorse because there are plenty of opportunities to have a chat with anyone who works in the areas you are interested in. My feedback from the nurses and educators helped me gain that confidence, that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to. So my advice to anyone who is looking to enroll for this program I 100% guarantee you will not regret it, at the end of this program you will receive a certificate that indicates that you completed the course successfully, this can be used as a reference for any future resumes for any future jobs, not just in this area but I am certain that you will receive something like this throughout a variety of different experiences.
