On Friday 5th May, the Annual School Athletics Carnival was a wonderful community event with students and staff thoroughly enjoying the excitement and competition generated by the tremendous House spirit that was very evident on this day. At the School Assembly on Monday 15th May, the Athletics Age Champions were congratulated and awarded their medals and the Athletics Champion House Trophy was presented with victory enjoyed by the members of Macquarie House! It was also wonderful to see several students presented with Sports Value Awards in the categories of courage, service and respect in recognition of their outstanding contribution to a number of School sporting competitions. Our student body is to be commended for embracing the many sporting opportunities on offer so far this year.
The Vinnies Winter Appeal
At this week's assembly, the Vinnies Winter Appeal was launched by Guest Speaker, Mr Tony Young from the St Vincent de Paul - Albion Park Conference. The valuable contribution that we can make to members of the broader community who are struggling at this time was emphasised and it has been great to see so many students already being generous by bringing in multiple ring pull cans of food over the past few days to help those in need. Religious Education Coordinator, Miss Biddle has encouraged every student and staff member to bring in at least one can of food to support this appeal with two bonus House points to be issued for every can of food that a student donates. As a school community, we hope to raise at least one thousand food items during this year’s appeal.
Joey's Life Coaching
This has been a regular feature at our recent assemblies. At the Week 3 School Assembly, SRC Representatives, Lucas Thompson (Year 11) and Aiden McEwan (Year 9) spoke about the theme of building a sense of positivity and confidence through the four simple steps of belief in yourself, identifying your strengths, planning for personal success, and taking action. Examples of the words of wisdom shared included: "Magic is believing in yourself. If you do that, you can make anything happen" and "All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them". The students are to be commended for this inspiring presentation.
All students were also reminded to visit the Careers Room to seek information and advice from our Careers Adviser, Mrs Kennedy regarding careers that they may be interested in pursuing in the future. On Wednesday 10th May, Years 10 and 12 students enjoyed their excursion to the 2023 Illawarra Schools Careers Expo where they gained valuable insights into the various career options available to them. Thank you to Mrs Kennedy for organising this valuable opportunity for those who attended this event. Many thanks also to Vocational Educational and Training (VET) Coordinator, Mr Milburn for organising Year 11 Work Placement, which has been an excellent experience for the Year 10 Pathways and Year 11 students involved.
Upcoming Year 7 -12 Assessment Tasks
As we approach Week 5, Years 7-10 students are preparing for their upcoming formal assessment tasks. If parents could please support and encourage your child to be completing extra home revision as they complete these over the next couple of weeks. They are acquiring the foundational knowledge which will equip them for the subsequent years of their studies at St. Joseph's. While Year 11 will also be preparing for various assessment tasks this term, Year 12 students are being strongly encouraged to complete extra revision as they work towards the HSC Trial Examination period which commences in Week 3 of Term 3. Please be mindful to support and guide your young person to maintain a balanced lifestyle at home to support their learning and wellbeing.
Mother's Day Morning Tea
A sincere thank you to the many parents and carers who joined us for the Mother's Day morning tea last Friday, 12th May. We were blessed with a beautiful warm sunny morning, and the delicious Joey's Cafe barista coffees and teas were enjoyed by all members of the school community who attended this gathering to celebrate this special day!

Wishing all our families an enjoyable and restful weekend!

Learning at Home Policy
This week students in Years 10-12 have been issued with an updated version of our at home learning policy. Students in these Year groups are required to average 10-12 hours of home learning a week to support the learning that takes place in the classroom. This home learning should be a mixture of set homework, completing unfinished work or catching up on any work missed as well as assessments and studying for upcoming exams. This averages out to around 2 hours / day with students free to work the time in around other aspects of their lives such as sport and or part time work. This is an important part of the learning process for senior students and is designed to help all students reach their academic potential. Those needing support to structure their at home learning can discuss with their class teachers or contact the Curriculum Office at any time.
Year 11 Half Yearly Reports
Year 11 half Yearly reports were distributed via Compass earlier this week. This is a great opportunity to sit and reflect on the progress students are making and identify areas that need to be considered to help increase engagement and progress in the classroom as well as structures in place at home to support learning. As Year 11 will sit their end of year exams at the end of Term 3, now is the time to start making the necessary arrangements to begin preparation to determine what works/ does not work for each student and the subjects they have chosen. The more students do now to develop an effective class/home study process the better they will fare at the start of Year 12 in Term 4. A reminder that we offer students the opportunity to gain support from teachers in the library after school as part of our ‘Mundy’ program. Most senior classes have access to either Edrolo or Atomi online learning resources that students can access to help with their knowledge and understanding of each course. Class teachers are also available to help with subject specific preparations.
Year 11 2024 Subject Selection Update
Year 10 have been working through the process of Year 11 subject selection over the past few weeks. The focus has been on understanding the requirements of Stage 6 education as well as looking at the options and requirements of the different pathways available to students at the end of Year 10 including:
- Completing the HSC
- Completing the HSC and obtaining an ATAR
- Studying for a HSC with a view to leaving
- Looking to leave and obtain a full time job, apprenticeship/traineeship or go to TAFE.
The selection process will continue in the coming weeks with students having the first round of subject information presentations from our Leaders of Learning as well as an Information Night for students and parents/carers (see below) Students will also have the opportunity to sit in and observe lessons in Stage 6 classes of subjects they may be interested in or want more information about in coming weeks.
Students will also receive the Year 11 2024 Subject Information Handbook. This handbook contains all the information students need to know about school requirements beyond Year 10 including:
- Year 11 / HSC Requirements
- Pattern of Study requirements
- Subject specific information
The handbook is a very thorough resource and students and parents are asked to take the time to review the contents to ensure they are fully aware of all the requirements around the various pathways and options available as part of Stage 6 education.
SAVE THE DATE - As part of the subject selection process, we will be having an Information Night for Students and Parents on Tuesday 30st May (Week 6). This will be an opportunity for students and parents to meet with representatives from each of the KLA areas to discuss, ask questions and clarify issues you may have before students make their initial subject selections. All students are strongly encouraged to attend, the night will run from 5 pm to 7 pm and further information on the schedule will be provided in the near future via Compass/email. As this is dinner time we will be running a sausage sizzle for those in attendance.
Semester 1 Assessment Weeks
Students in Years 7-10 have their assessment weeks fast approaching Stage 4 (students in Years 7 and 8) have their formal exams scheduled for Week 6 (starting 29th May). Stage 5 (students in Years 9 and 10) have their formal exams scheduled for Week 7 (starting 5th June). Final exam schedules will be distributed to students next week.

A massive thank you to everyone involved to make this year's athletics carnival such a success. Records were broken, ribbons were won and some very competitive House relays were held to showcase all our athletes at the athletics carnival.

A wonderful demonstartion of community and school spirit as our House system made its first carnival debut. Well done to everyone who wore their House Colour in support on the day and thank you to all the staff and students who got involved and helped officiate. From recording times/distances, collecting results and handing out places you were all crucial in making the day as successful as it was.

Congratulations to Macquarie who won this years Athletics Carnival!

Year 9 Geography Sustainable Biomes Geography Excursion
On Thursday 18th May Year 9 travelled to the Bonnie Vale Wetlands to undertake a geography fieldwork excursion. On the day students explored the bush, beach and wetlands allowing them to identify the main characteristics that differentiate the world’s biomes, analyse how people use and alter biomes for food production and discuss how the world’s biomes sustainably feed the world’s population. They undertook a range of fieldwork activities including crab catching, dip net fishing and bio-indicator fieldwork. The excursion allowed students to assess the health of the wetlands, investigate the distribution and physical characteristics of biomes and discuss sustainability strategies to minimise environmental impacts.

Open Boys Soccer
Coach: Mr Dribbus
Assistant Coach: Miss Power
A freezing chilly and windy day awaited our boys at this year's Diocesan Soccer Gala day. A determined team led by Captain Jett Stroemer led to some amazing plays and setups throughout their games. The first game against Holy Spirit saw Cooper Smith take on the goalie position, where he did a tremendous job in protecting many of the goals. Unfortunately, the boys went down 1-0 in this game but this was a great result against the overall champions on the day. Our next few games were all close with 1 draw, 1 loss (again by a narrow 1-0), and a win to get the boys through to the playoffs.
This team rallied together to take on St Johns in their final playoff. Star players of the game were Munesu and Zane scoring multiple goals to get the boys a win. A special mention goes to Luke Kolts who played some tremendous defence to stop St Johns from scoring. Overall, the spirits were high on the day and amazing leadership, teamwork, and St Joseph’s pride was shown. Well done to the 2023 Open Boys Soccer Team.
South Coast Regional Oz Tag Championships
Coach: Miss Power
What an unreal day out for this team! These girls trained so hard in the lead up to this day and showed so much dedication and determination. Our first game against Woonona High School was a great warm up game to get the girls focused and working together in a proper game setting before facing Corpus in their next draw. Unfortunately, they lost in their second game but then took 2 wins to make the quarterfinals. To make the quarterfinals was an outstanding effort, with 15 schools playing, we managed to make the top 8. Some amazing leadership was shown by Captain Emily Hollingsworth and a special mention to Kiara Shelton who was chosen as MVP. I am so proud to have coached this team and look forward to seeing a bright future for these girls in this sport. Well done team!
Coach: Mr Young
The day started out for the boys nice and steady, with plenty of time to warm up and prepare for the big day ahead. Our first match was against Holy Spirit College, which saw us go down 3-1 in a tight match. After rallying the team (and identifying where the try line was), Captain Jake Primmer led the team to victory against Keira High School, with a comfortable 4-1 win. Riding the win, the boys approached the next two games with enthusiasm and great sportsmanship, however, we unfortunately did not see victory against Bulli or Woonona High Schools.
Not to be deterred, the boys rallied behind the 7 & 8 and 9 & 10 Girls’ teams, cheering them on into the quarter finals for the 7 & 8’s and onto the grand final for the 9 & 10’s.
Congratulations to the 7 & 8 Boys MVP Pacey Moylan.
Overall a great day and which saw a lot of success for St Joseph’s, both on and off the field.
Coach: Mrs King
In a series of exhilarating matches at Dalton Park sports fields in Fairy Meadow, which resulted in the St Joseph’s OzTag Girls 9/10 team displaying their exceptional skills and determination as they secured victory over their opponents in all their qualifying matches. These early wins saw the girls go through to the Semi and Grand Finals. The OzTag Gala Day saw teams from numerous local schools battling it out to secure the Regional Championships. The OzTag Girls 9/10 team, led by their skilled captain Chantel Hristovska displayed remarkable agility and strategic gameplay. They immediately established their dominance on the field, with swift passes, accurate tagging, and impressive footwork.
Kiana Rieck, the team's nominated MVP, showcased her exceptional speed and agility, consistently evading defenders and creating scoring opportunities for her teammates. Her well-timed passes and clever decision-making were instrumental in the team's success. In a highly anticipated showdown, the OzTag Girls 9/10 team demonstrated their exceptional skills and determination in the grand finals. Despite a valiant effort, our team lost to the formidable Holy Spirit squad, in a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the final whistle. The Holy Spirit team proved to be a worthy adversary, countering with their own display of skill and resilience. Though disappointed with the loss, the OzTag Girls 9/10 team can hold their heads high.
Their journey to the grand finals was a testament to their hard work and dedication throughout their training preparations. They showed remarkable improvement as a team, and their progress was recognized and praised by their coach, Mrs King. Following their impressive performance in the regional Gala Day competition, the Joey’s Girls 9/10 team is now preparing to compete in the highly anticipated State Championships later this year. Despite narrowly missing out on victory in the grand finals, the team remains determined and focused on their ultimate goal of achieving success at the State level.
Coach: Mr Dowdell
On Tuesday, 9/10 boys arrive enthused and ready to play oztag. As usual, we played excellent schools like Edmund Rice, Illawarra Sports, Figtree High, and Woonona High. The boys loved every minute of playing, throwing the ball around, and having a lot of fun. Boys also put their bodies on the line with a lot of the boys coming off sore (but happy)!
The real highlight of the day was their positive attitude in supporting their fellow teams, in particular the girl's 9/10 team, celebrating all the tries and encouraging them into the Grand Final.
Coach: Mr Hetherington
Well, what a day. The girls' team arrived in great spirit for what lay ahead. They started off with a hard-fought loss and kept improving as the games rolled on. We had many shining lights on the day and every girl gave their all. I was so proud of their efforts, even when we
had a collision in a tagging situation which resulted in one of our players being taken off the field to take no further part and another collapsing from exhaustion. I would like to thank the intermediate girls for stepping up to fill the gap. What a team we will have next year.
Coach: Miss Sneddon
The Senior Boys Oztag team competed on Tuesday 8 May at Thomas Dalton Park against a variety of Catholic and Public Schools. Our first game was against Holy Spirit and proved to be quite a tough one. The boys were off to a great start, scoring a try within the first half of the game, but sadly we walked away not winning the game. The next game was against Kiama High, proving to be quite a tough one again. The boys demonstrated great skill in our third game against Woonona High, walking away with a win and spirits high.
Over the day we saw a great defensive side from all and quick ball-work from Cooper Smith and Munesu Marevanhema which resulted in many tries. With continual support and guidance from our coach Jackson Rieck, the team was able to implement different play strategies and better their defence throughout the day.
Overall, it was a great day with many players getting to demonstrate their skills and enjoy their time on the field. The boys put up a tough battle, being 2 players down and having to recruit from our Junior team. A big thank you to Caiden Judd and Ethan Aleckson who came up and played above their grade to help out the team.
School Athletics Age Champions & Champion House
Congratulations to everyone who competed and participated in the 2023 School Athletics Carnival. It was a sensational, hot, and sunny day that saw house rivalry in its prime. The day started off with the launch of our school Mascot ‘Joey’ and then Kembla took out the best House Chant. As the day went on Macquarie started to shine with team relays demonstrating their outstanding collaboration for house points. This contributed to Macquarie taking out the 2023 Champion House for Athletics. Congratulations!
Good luck to the students who have been selected to represent our school at the Diocesan Carnival next term.
Girls Rugby League
This week we had 9 girls attend the NSWCCC Girls U15s Rugby League Development Day in Maroubra. The workshop allowed the girls to learn all the basic skills of Rugby League and improve their confidence in the game. After the workshop was complete, the girls then competed in a round robin competition against other schools from Sydney. It was a great day out with the girls and I commend them on their determination on the day to have a go at what is a new sport for a lot of them.
Sporting Success
Hunter Graham & Bella Sacco
Congratulations to Hunter and Bella on their selection for the Metropolitan Rugby League and Southern Country Rugby League teams. These girls represented our school this week in Sydney and competed against other school regions from the NSW state.
Jackson Rieck
Congratulations to Jackson Rieck who has been selected to represent our school in the President’s NSWCCC Rugby League team. Unfortunately due to a fractured wrist, Jackson is unable to attend this tournament. The privilege of being acknowledged in the selection of this team is very honourable and commendable. Well done Jackson, we wish you all the best with your return to sport.
If your child has had sporting success outside of school we want to hear about it.
