From the Principal and Assistant Principal
Congratulations to Our Students!
We are incredibly proud of how well our students have adapted to the new start and finish times. It’s fantastic to see everyone arriving on time to homeroom each morning, ready to begin their day of learning. With the last bus arriving before 8:10 am, students have a few minutes to make their way to homeroom for an 8:15 am start.
When students arrive at school, they must move directly to the COLA. Students should not be in any other areas of the school.
While overall attendance has been excellent this term, students have been reminded that if they arrive late, they must sign in at the Front Office. Parents and carers will need to explain any absences via Compass, and it's important to note that these absences will appear on your child’s Semester Reports. Interestingly, many of the students who arrive late are those who live closest to the school and walk or ride their bikes. We encourage these students to leave home a little earlier to ensure they arrive on time.
Afternoon Buses
Our afternoon dismissal process has also improved. What used to take 40-45 minutes for all buses to depart now takes just 15 minutes, thanks to the new bus timetables. We have added additional staff to bus duty to assist with directing students to their buses. With 13 buses leaving in a very short time frame, it’s essential that all students follow staff instructions to ensure safety and efficiency.
Please remind your child of these important expectations:
- There is no need for students to leave class early. Teachers will not release students from classes until the bell rings at 2:40 pm.
- Students should wait on the grass of the Netball Courts until their bus is called.
- Only move to the bus bay when your bus is called over the PA, not when the transport app on their phone indicates its arrival. This helps us safely manage the flow of students, buses and traffic.
- Follow staff directions at all times. Sometimes the bus driver may need to stop boarding temporarily to move forward down the bus bay to reduce traffic congestion.
- No ball games and a hands-off policy apply at all times while waiting for buses.
Pedestrian Safety on Church Street
We would like to remind students of the importance of road safety when crossing Church Street before and after school. All students must use the Pedestrian Refuge Island located just outside the back gate of the school. While this area allows for crossing in two stages, it is not a formal pedestrian crossing, and students must give way to vehicles.
Students are encouraged to show courtesy by waving to thank drivers who stop or slow down to allow them to cross. Please also remind your child not to cross in other areas, especially between buses in the bus bay, for their own safety.
Students Driving to School
A reminder to our senior students who drive to school to please respect our neighbours’ properties by not parking in front of driveways and maintaining the required distance between the curb and your vehicle. In NSW, the rules clearly state that you cannot park on or across a driveway.
Also, please avoid parking in front of garbage bins on collection days, as this can prevent them from being emptied and causes inconvenience to the owners. Bins are collected on Monday mornings on Church Street and Macquarie Street.
Finally, we ask all students to follow road rules, drive with caution around the school, and show respect for other road users and our neighbours. Safety is our top priority, and we appreciate your cooperation in keeping our school community safe and respectful.
Best wishes to our Yr 12 students as they undertake their HSC exams over the next 2 weeks.
Year 11
Year 11 have started their HSC course work. Students are busy deciding what subjects they may wish to drop to finalise their pattern of study, the HSC Assessment Manual will be distributed by the end of this week.In coming weeks we will be having a series of meetings in regards to matters such as understanding how the HSC marking process works, to give these students every opportunity to establish positive learning behaviours from the start of the course to hopefully maximise their results and hence their post school opportunities.
Semester 2 Assessment Weeks
A reminder that assessment weeks for years 7 to 10 are fast approaching. Stage 5 will have their assessment week in week 4, Stage 4 have their assessment week in week 5. Last semester we posted some information in regards to how to prepare your student for home study and t=different techniques for home study. Students should now be undertaking a concerted approach at home to preparing for these tasks. It is never too late to start preparing.
2025 Electives
Students in Years 8 to 10 have now been advised of their elective choices for 2025. If there are any issues in regards to electives students are to come to the Curriculum office ASAP to discuss.
Lifeline’s Big Book Fair is a major fundraising event for Lifeline’s 24-hours crisis support service in the Illawarra and South Coast. The second-hand book sales are important as it's purchases help deliver the essential crisis services that are much needed within the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and South Coast.
This week, some of our Year 10 and Year 11 SRC Students were fortunate enough to assist with preparation for the Book Fair by unpacking boxes and setting up books ready for sale. Students enjoyed being part of such an important cause and service to the community.

Diocesan Boy's Cricket
We had a great day out at Thomas Dalton Park today with the junior boys for the cricket gala day. We ended up winning our 3 pool games. We played Holy Spirit game 1 and got 65 runs off our 7 overs and they ended up on 35.
Second game we comfortably beat St. John’s. We got 98 runs and they got 20. Cody Cartwright, Max Elliot and Mitch Whalan all retiring on scores of 25.
Third game was a really close game against St Francis. We chased down their score of 68 in the final over. Ben Gooda retired on 25 and Cody got us home.
The 3 wins put us in the final against Corpus Christi. Unfortunately they were too good today and beat us. Corpus batted first and set a competitive 83. We gave it a go but was just out of our reach. We finished on 53 runs. Great effort by the boys to make the final and finish in second place.
Cody Cartwright was a stand out with the bat and also big congratulations with Lucas Glover who picked up a hat trick in game 1 and finished with figures of 4-0 in game 1.
Hopefully we can go one better next year.
Berg Shield - Round 2
Goodluck to the boys who are heading to Greystanes to play against St Paul’s Catholic College in Berg Shield Round 2 Cricket.
Downie Shield Cricket
Senior boys were greeted by a glorious day and a freshly prepared Keith Grey Pitch for their match v's Magdalene. This was the youngest senior side we have taken to the Downie shield, with no year 11's and 4 year 9's and 1 year 8 student!. Some boys were very excited for their first game on turf.
The boys were sent in the bat and after a shaky start Tristan Denmede (25) and Cody Cartright (23) settled into their work and steadied the ship. Tristan fell to a catch on the boundary, that would have been 6 on any other junior field. Sam Huetter and Mitch Whalan provided a bit of middle order resistance but the tail didn't wag and we were all out for 109.
The boys needed to bring the full Joey's energy to defend their total, and they did. They got a couple of early breakthroughs with some sharp fielding and catching which gave the boys a sniff of hope. But the Magdalene boys dug in and scraped home, but not after a spirited effort from our boys. Tristan (1/6) and Thomas Welland (2/23) the best of the bowlers.
Well done boys, they played the game with great spirit and will be a force next year in the Downie!
Junior Boy's Basketball
Congratulations to the Junior boys team who finished in 2nd position in the Wollongong Diocese Basketball Gala Day. This team spent many early mornings throughout the year training for this event, improving their skills and knowledge of the game.
The team were undefeated in the round games beating St Francis, Magdalene, St Johns and Mount Carmel. This qualified them for the semi final play off against Edmund Rice.
We started the game slowly with Edmund Rice dominating the first 8 mins of the first half. A quick time out, followed by a change in defence, led to a resurgence with Joeys going into the half time break only two points behind.
The second half was a thrilling exhibition of awesome basketball, from both sides, finishing in a draw. This meant that there was now 2 minutes extra time to be played to find a winner.
Some outstanding basketball from Solomon Liu and a clutch 3 pointer by Jake Burling clinched the win by only one point.
Joeys was now in the grand final against John Therry. Unfortunately the depth and teamwork displayed by the opposition led to John Therry dominating the game and being the eventual champions.
Congratulations boys. An amazing, well earned result. Can't wait for next year.
Junior Girls Basketball
The girls got off to a rocky start going down to the highly fancied St Benedict’s. It was a bit of a nerve settler for all, with Sophie doing most of our ball handling. They then regrouped for a nail biting draw against St John’s. Jayda and Bri added some extra bite to the defence and the girls now knew they could be competitive. Joey’s then had their maiden victory, a gritty performance over Magdalene. Plenty of steals from Kiara and Cadence plus Libby locking down the key on defence sealed the win. Then another crowd pleasing thriller at the “snake pit” with everyone working hard for a comeback draw against Edmondson Park, Charlotte the standout, with her dominance in the paint. In the last game we went down to St Mary’s, but the girls had finished a respectable 4th in their pool, going into a consolation final against a red hot St Pats. These Joey’s reps, who had improved with every match, fought all the way to the buzzer and took out a great team victory. A perfect way to finish a really fun day.
Congratulations to the girls, who are all great sportswomen and showed so much improvement from term one, with their commitment to come in on (very cold) Tuesday mornings to improve their skills. Also thanks to the senior side who supported us on the sidelines wholeheartedly every match.
MVP goes to Charlotte Pike.
Senior Boys Basketball
The junior and senior boys’ basketball teams had a very early start, arriving at school at 6:15am to catch the bus to Minto for the Diocesan basketball championships. The boys were quickly awakened by Tom Hofman’s Boombox with a team singalong occurring on the journey.
The senior boys team (supposed to be years 10 & 11) had three Year 10 boys, and four Year 9 boys. An ankle injury to Nash Burling in the first game meant they were down to 6 players for the rest of the day. Despite being undersized and underage, the boys put in some determined performances and were competitive in all their games. We only lost by 9 points to Corpus Christi who ended up making the grand final.
The final game against St Benedict’s was their most exciting game of the day. A win would have meant that the boys would progress through to the 7th/8th playoffs. We were down by double digits when three consecutive 3-pointers by Tom Hofman put us back in the game. Some great rebounding by Jacob Ong, Brady Tomasi & Archie Faulks allowed us to capitalise on their misses while assists by Cody Cartright & Uhaan Zamel got us a couple more baskets. We were up by 4 points with 20 seconds to go when St Benedict’s hit a 3-pointer, then got a steal and fast break to give them a 2 point lead at the final buzzer. It was a disappointing end to a great game, however the boys should hold their heads high.
They should be very proud of their efforts against some very tall and strong opponents. They displayed great sportsmanship on the day and definitely brought some atmosphere to Campbelltown Basketball Stadium with their warmup music and loud cheering for the junior boys.
The MVP for the day was most definitely Thomas Hofman who was a great leader on & off the court, displayed maximum effort during all games, and scored most of the team’s points every game.
Senior Girls Basketball
On Monday October 21st, the Senior Girls Basketball Team competed in the Diocesan Basketball Gala Day at Beaton Park. The girls exhibited a lot of raw talent and athleticism, and their tenacity paid off as they were able to secure a playoff berth at the end of the round-robin draw. They played Corpus Christi in the play-off round, narrowly missing a win by a heartbreaking buzzer beater. Congratulations to the girls for showing grit and determination throughout the day, as well as exemplary sportsmanship.
MVP - Cate Mansbridge

Half of these girls have never played before including Jayda who had only played with the Joey’s team for school. Well done Jayda.
Welcome to the very first edition of House News!
We are thrilled to launch this regular series, designed to keep you connected with everything happening within the House community at St Joey’s.
As a parent, family member, or friend, you are an essential part of the House community. We believe that when families and friends support their students, it strengthens the House spirit and fosters a sense of unity. We invite you to engage with us and help us celebrate the achievements and milestones of our amazing students. Together, we’ll continue to nurture a community that values collaboration, achievement, and most importantly, a sense of belonging. We can’t wait to share more stories, events, and highlights with you in the coming editions!
Spotlight on the Keira House Leaders
In this edition, we're shining the spotlight on our three new House Leaders from Keira. These passionate students are excited about the year ahead. We asked them what being part of a house means to them. Check out what they had to say!
Isabella Micovski
What does being part of Keira mean to you?
Being part of a house may feel like you're getting forced to hang out with a bunch of people you barely know to earn points, but it’s so much more than that. Being part of Keira means that you are part of a community that will support you to be your best, all while having fun. It gives us a reason to encourage each other, celebrate our achievements and create a place for us to belong.
Why did you choose to become a Keira House Leader?
I chose to become a Keira House Leader to increase participation and change the attitude we have towards the house system. I aspired to rise to a position where I could have an impact on how we can earn points for our house and increase the ways students can get involved, so students can make the best out of the house system. I want to work with our other house leaders and house patrons, to foster a reliable community and make being part of Keira something to boast about in the playground.
What are your particular interests as a house leader?
I am interested in creating more ways for students to be recognised and rewarded for their achievements. Through social justice and environmental initiatives, and artistic, academic and sporting recognition, I hope to keep striving for community engagement and keep the Keira spirit alive.
What are you looking forward to this term?
Some exciting events coming up include Soctober and the Vinnies Christmas appeal, both will increase community engagement. I am especially looking forward to some of the fun initiatives we have planned for Christmas in the Cola towards the end of the year. This term I hope to finish off the year with a strong kick-off into the next, Let’s Go Keira!
Bella Brennan
What does being part of Keira mean to you?
Being a part of a house like Keira is full of moments that you don’t realise are memories until later- it's a mix of fun events, lighthearted banter, and that mutual ground with your peers. It’s the little things, like cheering on someone purely because they’re in your house and wanting everyone to do the very best that they can simply because, at the end of the day, we’re all one big team.
Why did you choose to become a Keira House Leader?
I wanted to step up as a Keira House Leader because I think it’ll be fun to bring everyone together and facilitate events. I can identify the aspects we are succeeding in and I want to work towards elevating our weaker points. My overarching goal is to foster communal relationships between Keira house members and create some awesome memories.
What are your particular interests as a House Leader?
I’m excited to be involved in house events and keep the energy high in Keira. I want to coordinate activities everyone enjoys and looks forward to engaging with. But most importantly, I want to enjoy a memorable year together! (and win of course)
What are you looking forward to this term?
I’m excited to initiate some new events and see how I can bring everyone together in a fresh and fun way. I’m all about making this term one to remember, with a good mix of Keira's spirit and enjoying the moment.
Tasman Rippon
What does being part of Keira mean to you?
Being part of Keira means being a part of a tight-knit community that fosters a sense of teamwork and belonging sharing the passionate drive to success. It’s about lifting each other, celebrating achievements together, ensuring that every member feels involved and valued, and reflecting inclusion.
Why did you choose to become a Keira House Leader?
I chose to become a Keira House leader because I'm passionate about bringing people together and creating an environment where everyone has a chance to express themselves. I wanted to become Keira's House Leader as I wanted to change the participation levels within the house system regarding sport and wanted to foster a community of inclusion and positivity. I believe leadership is about empowering others, being a central part of me, I inspire my peers to get involved and feel proud being part of Keira.
What are your particular interests as a house leader?
As Keira House Leader, my key interests lie in enhancing participation across all areas of our house, including sports, environmental initiatives and social activities. I’m especially focused on increasing involvement in our sports events, ensuring that everyone feels encouraged to participate, regardless of their experience level.
What are you looking forward to this term?
This term, I’m looking forward to seeing Keira House come together with more enthusiasm and drive than ever. I’m excited about organising events and fundraisers that foster our Catholic ethos. I'm extremely excited and looking forward to the team spirit and Keira rising to the top and finishing the year strong.

Vex Robotics - State and National Qualifier Competition
On Monday the 21st of October Knox Grammar hosted a Vex Robotics State and National Qualifier Competition. St Joseph’s was represented by two teams: Team 1 Isaac Gee, Brandon Smith, and Riley Mallon, and Team 2 Ari Bone, Ben Martin, and Xavier Bardak.
VEX Robotics is an educational robotics platform designed to inspire students to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields through hands-on learning and competition. It offers different levels of robotics kits and systems, from elementary to high school and even university levels, allowing students to design, build, and program robots.
The VEX Robotics system includes tools for both mechanical and coding development, using components such as motors, sensors, gears, and structural parts to construct robots. Students can also program their robots using software like VEXcode, which supports block-based and text-based programming in languages like Python and C++.
VEX Robotics is well-known for its global competition, the VEX Robotics Competition (VRC), which challenges students to solve real-world problems by designing and programming robots to complete specific tasks in a game-like setting. It's one of the largest robotics competitions in the world, promoting teamwork, problem-solving, and innovation.
Team 1 had some tough luck in their round games, with team pairings that did not suit their robot and not allowing them to score as many points as they had initially predicted. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to progress to the finals. The boys did incredibly well to design, redesign and code their robot as game conditions changed and breakdowns occurred.
Team 2 had a remarkable run. They qualified for the finals in 12th place and went on to finish the competition in an impressive 6th place overall. Additionally, Team 2 received a prestigious Design Award for Ben's unique trigger and release mechanism, a feature that greatly impressed the judges. This innovative mechanism had never been seen before in Vex robotics.
A big thank you to the parents who transported students and equipment all the way to Knox Grammar School in Wahroonga, we couldn’t have done it without you. Congratulations to both teams for their hard work and dedication. We are proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing them continue to excel in future competitions.
As part of Catholic Mission month, this October, the SRC and YMLs are holding a socktober fundraiser for Catholic Mission. During week 2, we have been selling silly and footy socks, as we aim to raise money for a Caring Center in Mongolia. The Caring Center provides a home for young children like Otgonbayar and his friends who have nowhere else to call home.
As a faith filled Joey's community, we aim to kick goals for change to make this work a better and just place. Our generous donations will provide kids in Mongolia with nutritious meals to help them grow up healthy and strong, essential school supplies to support their education and warm winter clothing for the cold Mongolian winters.
We would like to extend a warm thank you to Collins from CeeCee Collective for the generous donation of footy socks to support this fundraiser. We would also like to thank the students who have already purchased socks this week.
Student will be able to wear their socks next Friday, the 1st of November, for silly sock day. We require a gold coin donation for all those participating, with all proceeds going to Catholic Mission. We thank you in advance for your generosity and support. We recognise that not everyone can donate, so we ask that you keep the children in Mongolia and the work of Catholic Mission in your prayers.
