Year 12 Graduation
This week, our community gathered to celebrate the Graduation of the Year 12 Class of 2025. Graduation is always a significant milestone, a time to look back with gratitude and pride, and also to look forward with confidence and expectation.
This year, I spoke about the theme of hope. Hope is not simply wishful thinking; it is active. It requires courage, perseverance, and faith that the future holds promise. As Pope Francis reminded us: “The future does have a name, and its name is hope.”
Our graduating class has embodied this spirit. They have grown into fine young men and women, marked by generosity, leadership, and resilience. Their resilience was tested early, with much of their time in Years 7 and 8 disrupted by COVID lockdowns and remote learning. Instead of the typical early high school experience, they learned to adapt, persevere, and find new ways of connecting. Those lessons have shaped them into a cohort with grit and determination.
This group also rose to a challenge I gave them in their senior years: to help enhance the culture of St Joseph’s. Culture is not written in documents or displayed on walls; it is lived out daily in the way people treat each other. This Year 12 group has helped to create a culture of respect, connection, and high standards. St Joseph’s is a better place because of their contribution, and their impact will be felt for years to come.
On behalf of the school, I extend my thanks to those who have supported our Year 12 students on their journey:
- To their PALS, Mr Hetherington and Mrs Rasmussen, for guiding the cohort with wisdom, patience, and humour.
- To the classroom teachers, for countless hours of preparation, encouragement, and persistence.
To the parents and carers, for the trust you place in our school and your constant support.
While Graduation marks the end of one chapter, the journey is not yet complete. The HSC examinations are fast approaching, and this talented year group has the potential to achieve outstanding results. My challenge to them is simple:
- Approach the coming weeks with diligence and discipline.
- Recognise that early entry offers are only one pathway; success in the HSC will open even more doors.
- Lean on the wisdom of teachers, and look after each other.
- And above all, hold onto hope, the conviction that effort, perseverance, and faith will bear fruit.
To the Year 12 Class of 2025: Congratulations on reaching this milestone. Step forward with confidence. Stay grounded in your faith. Trust that you are well prepared, and believe that you have what it takes to make a difference in the world. Your families, your teachers, and the St Joseph’s community are behind you, cheering you on.
We are proud of you. We believe in you. And we entrust you to a future filled with hope.

Happy Holidays
Term 3 is always the busiest of the year. Between exams for Years 11 and 12 as well as reports, subject selection for Years 8 and 9 and all the usual school activities that take place the Curriculum Office has been very busy. We would like to take the time to thank the teachers and students on the hard work and diligence shown this term and wish everyone a well deserved and restful break. We look forward to seeing everyone at the start of Term 4 as we begin the process of wrapping up a busy but productive year of learning across the school.
Year 12
Congratulations to Year 12 who this week formally concluded their 13 years of school based education. It was great to be able to take the time to recognise the efforts of so many students who have excelled in their subjects however it must be noted that all students should be congratulated on the sustained effort required to get to the end of Year 12. We wish them well in their exam preparations over the coming weeks and are confident that they will do well in their final exams.
Student Success - in recent weeks we have received notification that a number of students in our Year 12 Drama, Visual Art and Industrial Technology - Furniture classes have received official nominations for Onstage/SHAPE which is a statewide showcase of the best HSC practical projects in those subjects. Congratulations to the students involved as well as their teachers who guided them through the journey. Fingers crossed some of these students make the final cut which will be made later this year.
Year 11
Year 11 have now completed their end of year exams. This finalises the Year 11 component of their Stage 6 study with students beginning their HSC courses at the start of Term 4. In most cases students will be able to drop one subject from their pattern of study for Year 12 - the process for this will be outlined early next term.
Stage 5 Electives
Students in Years 8 and 9 received their elective choices for 2026 last week. Just a reminder that parents are required to sign the confirmation sheet and return to the Curriculum Office last week. We will endeavour to correct any errors/change requests for student electives early in Term 4.

OnStage will be held at the Seymour Centre, Sydney, from February to March 2026. Congratulations to all the nominees!
Science Reminder
This is a reminder regarding our health and safety protocols for all science laboratories. To prevent any risk of contamination or accidents, we must enforce a strict policy that prohibits food and drink within the labs. This is a standard safety measure in any scientific environment.
This policy includes water bottles. As the entire room is classed as a laboratory, allowing water bottles creates a risk of spills on sensitive equipment and potential for chemical contamination.
We ask for your support in reminding students to drink water before they enter the lab. They will will be able to access their water bottles again immediately after the lesson concludes.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in upholding these safety standards.
Mrs Elphick
Leader of Learning - Science
Congratulations to our two Year 10 teams who were selected to represent Joeys at Innovate for Impact 2025.
This event provided students from around the Illawarra an opportunity to showcase their work in the STEM field. Our students created products that help young people overcome challenges.
Renewed by Faith - Isabella Miranda, Isaac Gee and Solomon Liu created an app addressing mental health, providing young people with strategies to cope as well as a link to helpful verses from the Bible.
Study Buddy - Millie Murphy, Connor Shelton and Lily Tecles created an app helping young people develop the skills to improve their study.
Both teams did a great job talking to industry experts, students, parents and teachers about their project.

Sustainability Workshop at Edmund Rice College
In Week 7, a group of our students had the opportunity to attend an annual Sustainability Workshop hosted at Edmund Rice College. The event featured guest speaker Dr James Dorey, who shared his expertise on native bees and the importance of pollinators in our environment. Students also heard from Sarah of Popes Produce, who spoke about practical ways to support sustainable food production in the community.
The hands-on sessions were a highlight, with students creating bee hotels to encourage native bee populations and designing sculptures from clay and natural materials. The workshop was both educational and inspiring, giving our students new insights into how they can contribute to environmental sustainability.
Upon our return, we found a lovely spot for our Bee/Insect Hotel. Thank you to all of our students who actively participated in this educational experience.

Recent News and Events
Young Eyes Festival - 24 September 2025
Three of our students — Jordan Hoogendoorn, Tahlia Macey, and Lily Pham — took part in the Young Eyes Festival, bringing their innovative business ideas into the spotlight. Along with them, fourteen Year 9 & 10 students joined as spectators, gaining firsthand exposure to entrepreneurship in action.
- Jordan Hoogendoorn presented Keeperbot, an AI-powered goalkeeping machine. Jordan pitched how this technology could help elevate performance and support soccer playing in training from grassroots to elite level.
- Tahlia Macey introduced LipLink, a multipurpose cosmetic product combining lip gloss, lip balm, and lip liner. Her idea demonstrated strong product design thinking and appeal in both function and marketability.
- Lily Pham shared Housing Hope, a social initiative aimed at supporting female victims of domestic violence by providing access to tiny homes. Lily’s pitch was focused on social impact, safety, and dignity in housing solutions.
Students listened to many pitches from participants across the Illawarra, experiencing speed-pitching sessions and mentor feedback. They observed how ideas were refined, delivered, and judged under pressure, which gave them insight into what it takes to develop a viable product or social venture.
Overall, the day was inspiring:
- It allowed our students to test their public speaking, creativity, and innovation skills in front of real business leaders.
- They gained perspective on what makes a pitch stand out — not just the idea, but clarity, passion, and feasibility.
- The mentorship and networking offered gave them ideas and motivation, whether they are leaning toward business, social impact, or creative enterprise.
BlueScope Steelworks Tour - 19 September 2025
Last week, students had the opportunity to take part in the BlueScope Steelworks Industry Tour, gaining a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of Australia’s largest manufacturing operations.
The day began at the Visitor Centre with a safety briefing and fitting of PPE before boarding the tour bus to explore the vast Port Kembla Steelworks site. Students experienced:
- Seeing massive machinery and infrastructure up close, from locomotives to raw material stockpiles.
- Feeling the heat inside the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant as they watched molten steel being transformed.
Observing the continuous slab caster, getting front-row views of steel being shaped into slabs. - Finishing at the Hot Strip Mill, where they watched slabs being rolled into coils in a fast-paced, high-energy process.
The tour gave students a first-hand understanding of the full steelmaking process — from raw materials to finished product — and insight into the scale, technology, and career opportunities within the steel industry.
Silverdale Illawarra Industry Exploration Tour - 16 September 2025
Recently, students participated in the Silverdale Illawarra Industry Exploration Tour, gaining first-hand insight into the wide range of careers in the equine industry.
The day began with an early departure, taking students to training stables, where they learned about the daily routines, facilities, and roles involved in preparing racehorses. Students then visited Kembla Grange Racecourse, discovering the many different jobs that keep one of NSW’s premier racetracks running smoothly.
A highlight of the day was the visit to a world-class bloodstock breeding farm, where students observed broodmares, foals, and yearlings, while learning about the breeding process and preparation of young horses for their racing careers.
Throughout the tour, students met industry experts, hearing their personal career journeys and gaining valuable advice about training pathways, industry traineeships, and the wide variety of job opportunities available.
The experience gave students a realistic and inspiring look at the equine industry, encouraging them to think about future careers in racing, breeding, training, and related fields.

Our students represented our school with pride and had some fantastic results including Isabella Clowes placing 1st in the Junior Female Triple Jump, Kaylie Murray placing 4th in 13yrs Shot Put and Bianca de Swardt placing 4th in the 1500m and 800m events.
Girls Dio Cricket
Our inexperienced girls' cricket team went above and beyond at the recent gala day, especially considering only one team member plays cricket outside of school. It was amazing to watch the girls have a go, develop their skills as the day progressed, and most importantly, cheer each other on. All the girls exceeded expectations, and they should be incredibly proud of their performance. We encourage them to consider playing cricket over the summer.
Our first match was against a formidable St Pat's team, which boasted several representative players. While the experience of St Pat's secured them the win, our girls put up a fantastic fight. As the day went on, the team improved immensely. Batting second in our next game against John Terry, we managed a brilliant win. A major highlight was Olivia R’s incredible six, which she followed up in the same over with a beautifully timed four. She was the only student in our pool to hit a six all day. Our final pool game was against the undefeated Holy Spirit. Our girls performed extremely well, and a key moment was Lilly P’s spectacular ‘caught and bowled’, which was wildly celebrated on the sidelines.
Because of our win and strong performances, we made the playoffs against Corpus Christi. We bowled first and did an amazing job to keep the score within reach. A special mention goes to Violet P, who took her first-ever cricket wicket – a fantastic achievement! The run chase was tense, and despite a brilliant effort, we narrowly lost by just six runs.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to Brooklyn B for her expert coaching and scoring on the day. She was an inspiration and provided invaluable advice to the girls. Thanks also to Blake R and Mitchell W for their fantastic coaching, for warming the girls up before each game, and for their technical advice. Kobi E also deserves special recognition as our fearless captain. With her excellent cricket knowledge, she skillfully managed all field placings and provided wonderful guidance and support to the less experienced players.
Lastly, a thank you to Mr Lewis for his work preparing the girls for the day and a heartfelt thank you to all the parents who helped get the girls to the event and to those who were able to stay and cheer on our team. I am sure they would agree it was a great day and that the girls’ performance was something to be proud of.
Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I was incredibly proud to accompany the team. I hope the girls are inspired to continue developing their cricket skills, and I look forward to seeing the team return next year, bigger and better than ever.
MVPs: Lilly P and Olivia R
Boy's Dio Cricket
On Wednesday the 24th of September the Junior boys cricket side competed in the Diocesean Cricket Gala day at Reed Park, Dapto. The games were 7 overs a side and everyone was given a chance to bowl one over.
Our first game we took on St Benedict's and we chased down their total of 43. Max Elliot retired 25 not out. Second game we took on Holy Spirit. Unfortunately we didn't play our best and Holy Spirit was too strong and defeated us. They posted 63 runs and we replied with 47.
Third game the boys bounced back and had a huge win over St Francis. We posted 100 runs off 7 overs with Blake Knight, Max Elliot and Mitch Whalan all retiring on 25 runs. The boys backed it up in the field and restricted St Francis to 17 runs. With Sam Barrett taking a big wicket with his first ball. Our final game we had another good win over John Therry. We chased down their total of 37 quite easily.
We finished second in our pool and made the finals and found ourselves in a playoff against Magdalene for 3rd spot. We lost early wickets and could never really get going and posted 43. Jaxson Smith picked up a great wicket early but unfortunately Magdalene chased the total down.
We finished 4th out of 10 teams on the day and learnt a lot to take with us into the Berg Shield.
MVP - Blake Knight

Thank You - Vinnie's Healthy Snack Packs
As part of our ongoing commitment to serving others, the Year 9 SRC students, Lily Pham and Kate Lonard recently prepared Healthy Snack Packs to support families facing hardship. This initiative gave students the chance to contribute in a practical and meaningful way. Students were able to assemble 120 Healthy Snack Packs. Students worked collaboratively to organise and pack the snack packs demonstrating leadership and compassion in action.
This project not only provided support for families in need but also encouraged our students to reflect on the importance of giving back and living out the Josephite values.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated food items for these packs. Your generosity has made a genuine difference for families doing it tough, and together we continue to bring hope and care where it is most needed.
