Another interesting fortnight in the world and at school. I hope you have had a chance to see our Facebook page and the wonderful opportunity students have had in the studio space with recording, thank you to Mr Dennelly for all his hard work getting this up and running. Next year we will be offering the VET entertainment framework for the first time so students will have the opportunity to gain a qualification in this area of interest. (Unfortunately at the moment not much work out there! But it will eventually return to normal performances and events and aren’t we all looking forward to that).
In this coming week we have the Director of Schools and the Bishop visiting and having a chat with our Year 12 Captains and SRC, this is in lieu of the normal full Year 12 gathering. This is an opportunity for our students to give feedback to the leaders of our system and discuss their concerns and hopes for the future.
Over the next few weeks Year 10 students will be participating in Subject selection for Year 11. Students should see this as a way of exploring options, it is the time to try new things and develop skills. The best advice is follow your passion. In today's job markets the research shows that people change direction and jobs much more frequently than in the past and the opportunities for further education and training are so much more available albeit at a cost but can lead to career progression and fulfilment so don’t feel locked in! Just remember that our world needs researchers, scientists, medical personnel, builders and tradies, carers, teachers and business people who have an ethical and moral compass and demonstrate compassion that can make the world a better place and students of St Joseph’s can certainly do that.
Ms Amanda Wilson
Principal
To save uncertainty on the day, we ask that if you haven't already done so, you have a conversation with your child/ren about your plans for their transport home in the event of a school closure. A reminder that senior students will not be permitted to give other students lifts home, except for their siblings if this is what your family decides.
To assist us in coordinating student departures should a temporary school closure be required, if parents/caregivers who have not already done so could please nominate your preferred method for your child/ren’s transport home by clicking this link, Nominated Transport Form.
You will then only need to text your student’s mobile phone or call the school if there is a change of plans for some unexpected reason on the day.
To minimise vehicle congestion, a reminder we will be asking that A-K surname students be picked up in Macquarie Street and L-Z surname students to be picked up on Church Street. In the case of Macquarie Street, the direction of traffic flow needs to be into Amaral Avenue and out of Macquarie Street.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Thank you again for your ongoing cooperation as we overcome the challenges of COVID-19 together.
LIMITED SPACES AVAILABLE - YEAR 7 AND YEAR 11 2021

Student Absences and Medical Clearances

- a cough; or
- a fever; or
- they have cold/flue like symptoms; or
- fatigue; or

Similarly, any students who are sent home from school because they have any of the above symptoms, are required to provide a medical certificate clearing them for return. Record of School Achievement (RoSA)
We would just like to provide a little refresher about the RoSA as it is quite clear a number of students (especially in Yrs 10-12) do not fully understand what the RoSA is. The following is taken from the NESA website. Students and parents are asked to take the time to read this and explore further on the NESA website to fully understand this credential, why it is important and how it achieved.
“The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) issues the Record of School Achievement (RoSA) to eligible students who leave school before completing the Higher School Certificate (HSC).
The RoSA is a cumulative credential, meaning it contains a student’s record of academic achievement up until the date they leave school. This could be between the end of Year 10 up until and including some results from Year 12.
The RoSA records completed Stage 5 (Year 10) and Preliminary Stage 6 (Year 11) courses and grades, HSC (Year 12) results, and where applicable participation in any uncompleted Preliminary Stage 6 courses or HSC courses.
The RoSA is useful to students leaving school prior to the HSC because they can show it to potential employers or places of further learning.
The RoSA is also available to students who, from 2020, have not demonstrated the HSC Minimum Standard to receive their HSC.
More information about the RoSA can be found on the NESA website.
Hopefully, this helps to clarify the RoSA a little. Feel free to contact the Curriculum Office if you have any further questions.

Vinnies COVID Winter Appeal
Each year at St Joseph's we support the St Vincent de Paul Society with their various fundraising initiatives. This year has been strangely different for everyone, including St Vincent's de Paul! So, we would like to continue our support of this wonderful charity with such events like our Fluro Friday, which we held today. We also have some things planned for Term 3. The Vinnies COVID Winter Appeal is currently calling for donations and all money raised from our Fluro Friday today will go towards this appeal. If you, as a family would like to contribute further to this appeal, please visit the Vinnie's website to make a donation online. Even the smallest donation will make a huge difference to a local family.
We have received information from the Wollongong Catholic Education Office that ALL Term 2 and Term 3 Diocesan Sporting Trials, Carnivals and Gala Days have been cancelled on advice from CEDoW leadership and current government advice and restrictions. WELLBEING
As we approach the school holidays it is important to recognise the journey we have been on with COVID-19, where we have come from and where we are today.
I often talk to students about Mental Fitness and the role it plays in our day to day mental health. Just like going to the gym or exercising for 'physical' fitness, our mental fitness plays an important role in how we develop socially and emotionally. This week, attached below is a link for a FREE online webinar on 'Mental Fitness' provided through Black Dog Institute. It is a great opportunity to learn a bit more about Mental Fitness and supporting those around you.
