The fourth term is always busy. Year 12 are nearly at the end of their HSC exams and we are looking forward to the Formal celebration next week. Year 11 are well into their HSC year of study and are about to move into the first assessment period.
Most of my time has been in recruitment over the last few weeks - I am pleased to say we have a high quality of teachers for 2023 and I am looking forward to working with them all. Unfortunately, the teacher shortage is a real thing - we are low on available casuals and will be looking to engage with new teachers in this area for 2023.
Pyjama day on Friday has been a good fundraiser and a success initiated by Year 12 Leaders. There was a lot of laughter and fun around some of the PJ’s being worn on the day.
Mr Brown’s last day with SJCHS is next Tuesday. For 2023 he is taking up a position at CCCHS. We wish him all the best.
Year 7 camp was highly rewarding for the students in developing skills and building relationships. Thank you to the supervising staff who made this experience possible for the students. Congratulations to the majority of students whose behaviour was excellent.
I would like to encourage all students to keep working towards their semester grades and learning outcomes that will support them next year as well.

HSC Exams
The HSC exams conclude today with our Design and Technology students sitting the final HSC exam on the schedule. Well done to all our Year 12’s on completing this journey. The feedback from the exam supervisors has been very positive. We now sit and wait to see the results the students have achieved. Hopefully, they are reflective of the hard work that has been done over the past 12 months. In the meantime enjoy the break!!
Yr 11 Update
Last week we had a Year Meeting with Year 11 regarding HSC rules and procedures. Students were also issued a hard copy of the NESA HSC Rules and Procedures Manual. Students and parents/carers and strongly advised to take the time to review this manual to ensure they are aware of all the requirements to follow to qualify for the HSC.
Year 11 Yearly Reports have been completed and are available to access via Compass.
HSC Minimum Standards Tests
We will be running 2 further attempts for students in Years 11 and 10 to sit the HSC Minimum Standards Tests. Students needing to complete these tests may be withdrawn from class in the coming weeks to provide extra tutorial support to assist in meeting the required benchmark for these tests.
Subject Selection Confirmation
Over the next two weeks, we will be issuing students in Years 8-10 confirmation of their chosen electives for 2023. Students in Year 10 will also be interviewed to ensure they meet the required NESA qualification criteria and that their subjects align with their intended post-school options.
Semester Two Assessment Periods
Year 10 students are completing their Semester 2 Assessment week this week. Next week is set aside for Year 9 students while Year 7 and 8 students will have their assessment week in Week 6.
Year 7 Japanese Class
Year 7 students Kenzie and Sophie wrote the following about their Japanese class experience:
The Year 7 Japanese class recently got to have their own tea ceremony inside the class. A Japanese tea ceremony is when a group of people come together and eat sweet foods while one person makes green tea for them. After the sweetness from the food sets, the tea is given to the people to use as a palate cleanser to wash away the sweet taste. We got to have some delightful foods such as different flavoured cakes, red bean mochi, and many other foods before tasting some of the green tea our teacher, Abel Sensei, had made for us. Some people were even taught how to make green tea the way it is made during all tea ceremonies, and everyone got a turn to enjoy it. It was a fun time for everyone and was an extremely delightful experience.
Thank you Abel Sensai for organising this experience for our class.

Hi Year 12,
Hope your HSC exams are going well. Please backup any data including pics, docs, school work you wish to keep, etc from your school Google Docs/Gmail School account (yourname@dowstu.catholic.edu.au) as the account will be deactivated at the end of the year (2022).
The best practice would be to download the folders/files that you want to keep and store them on a separate hard drive or upload them to some other cloud storage.
Once your school account is deactivated you will not be able to access any of your material on your school Google Drive/email so this is important. If you have used your school email account to register for other services you will need to transfer those to another email address. Make sure that you contact any prospective employers, universities, colleges, contacts etc using your own new/personal email address.
After your last HSC exam, we recommend that you remove the Year 12 profile from your laptop. To do this click on the Apple logo at the top left, go to System Preferences, click on Profiles and remove any school profiles. You can also delete the app called Managed Software Centre from your applications folder by moving it to the bin or right-clicking and Move to Bin.
For those that have school-owned laptops on loan please return them to the IT office if you haven’t done so already.
Wishing you all the best on your journey forward.
Thank you to all the families that make such an effort to ensure that their fees are up to date. School fees are essential for the financial viability of Catholic schools. School principals have the responsibility of ensuring school fees are collected. If you are experiencing financial difficulties and are unable to make payments, please contact the finance office or email accounts@sjchsdow.catholic.edu.au.

Environment club update November 2022
On Wednesday 2 November, some wonderful members of the Environment Club helped to sort through all the blue Vinnies bins so that the 10c containers could be collected and donated to St Vincent De Paul. We collected thousands of bottles which will deliver much-needed funds to St Vincent De Paul. It was a huge job as many of the bins had filled up with water in the rain, but the dedicated students persevered. The bins will now be cleaned and sealed from the rain so that they can remain clean for future container deposits.
The students also delivered yellow recycling bins to (almost) all classrooms so that mixed recycling can again be collected from classrooms and kept out of the landfill. These bins will be sorted and emptied weekly by students in homerooms.
Thank you to the following wonderful students for their commitment to sustainability and reducing the impact St Joseph’s has on the environment:
Miah Williams, Samuel Morris, Lara Grimson, Isabelle Plattner, Bailey Brennan
Mrs Musgrave

The final DOW Sports Gala Days have concluded for 2022. Unfortunately due to rain, the AFL days were cancelled. Thank you to the coaches who worked hard to organise these teams and thanks to the students who participated in the AFL coaching sessions. Hopefully, you were able to develop your AFL skills for 2023.

Berg Shield Cricket
On Thursday 27 October, the Year 7-9 boys' cricket team travelled up the mountain to Oran Park to kick off their campaign for the Berg Shield. The sun was shining and the sky was blue. Our opponents, Magdalene College, were as excited as we were to finally get to play and they fielded a mixed team of boys and girls of varying cricket experience. Joey’s started the match perfectly by winning the toss and sending Magdalene into bat. Unfortunately, that was as close as the game got, as they scored 192 runs off their 20 overs, with their opening batter scoring 112. Unfortunately, Joey’s only scored 40 runs, however, the foundations are there for future years. I could not be more proud of the way the boys carried themselves with respect and sportsmanship, even after the hard day!
The team: Tristan Denmeade, Wil Moran, Aaron Smith, Tyler Ruprecht, Ben Maloney, Thomas Welland, Archie Faulks, Sam Huetter, Ridhaan Pannala, Mackay Schumacher, Cody Cartwright, Cooper Hill.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal
As a school community we are collecting items to create hampers to donate to St Vincent de Paul to help those in our communities who are in need of support this Christmas. In homerooms, students are asked to allocate their names to an item that they can bring in to donate to their homeroom hamper. Any support that students and families can provide to these hampers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you to those students and families who already bought items in for their hampers, it is greatly appreciated!!
